iPhone Backup Extractor allows you to mess with the iPhone backups. Perhaps, you can use that or something similar?

Is there any way to recover a recently deleted video from the iPhone 5 that hasnt had a itunes backup before this happened?
Sorry, no. The data is gone if not backed up to iCloud or iTunes on your computer.

Have you backed up your phone to your computer since taking the video?

Thanks for the response and to the others. I ended up just making new footage better than what I lost since it was for a school project last semester. I just wish there was some way that Apple didn't closely tie both the original footage and the imported footage on iMovie but I guess it's to save memory.

I know a method to recover the iPhone 5/5S/5C deleted/lost videos on Mac computer, you can have a try, maybe it can help you.
Step 1. Select iPhone Backup to Scan
When running the Coolmuster Data Recovery for iPhone iPad iPod program on your computer, it will automatically detect all iTunes backup files on your PC and display them one by one on the interface. Just select the one of your iPhone, and then hit "Start Scan" to begin to scan for files.
Step 2. Preview and Find All Lost Videos
When the scan is over, all backup files will be displayed into different folders. To recover iPhone deleted video, just click "Camera Roll" in the left panel, and then you'll see the detailed pictures or videos in the right panel. Go through and find all videos you want to recover, just select them one by one.
Step 3. Recover Deleted Movies from iPhone
If you're sure that you've selected all videos you want, then you can click "Recover" button to save them on your computer without any quality losing.
