If you registered it with Apple, then you can retrieve the serial number from your registration information. It would also be in the email receipt you would have received had you purchased it online. You can contact the store from which it was purchased.
If you have a recent location from where it was online, report that to the local police. Note, that the serial number will in no way enable you to track it. All it does is help you prove ownership and put it on the National/International Hot List.

You can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers for items purchased or registered with your Apple ID. If you purchased AppleCare it ought to be there.MacBooks iMacs iPads AirPorts, OS X Mountain Lion, 28 years Apple!

Thank you for the response however i have a few more questions?
What happens in the event that i dint register it. I did try out My Support Profile and all I can see is my iphone serial number.
The other issue is that I am in Africa (Uganda to be exact) and we do not have a Local Store. Only an "Authorised Deal" and they tell me tht i need a serial number in the event that someone (the thief) takes it there requesting for it to be whipped clean.
