This weekend, was standing right beside my sister with her Samsung S3 on the exact same provider network (Bell/Telus). The S3 had a stable HSPA+ connection with expected speed, while my iPhone 5 was stuck at 2-3 bars of 3G. Tried resetting the network settings, tried rebooting, tried walking around a bit ... Same results on both phones.
Called Telus this morning, and was told the iPhone 5 issue is "nationwide" but there is no expected timeline on when it will be resolved.
Then I called Apple for the first time. I explained how the phone only connects to 3G on the Bell/Telus network, informed them about the "nationwide" issue, but also mentioned the Samsung S3 side-by-side experience. The phone support person put me on hold for a bit to consult with a senior advisor, and then came back and offered a replacement phone. In their opinion, it could be a defective device.
However, I mentioned before how my current iPhone 5 reported a 4G connection while travelling in the USA last week.
So this can be ...
a) a Bell/Telus issue
b) a defective phone
c) both (a) and (b)
Will know more Friday after my Genius Bar appointment.
In the meantime, I see that Rogers has expanded its LTE coverage to more Ontario cities.
I guess it was too good to be true Now 6 days since I got my replacement iPhone 5, I'm still having the same issues. I'm losing service 2-3 times per day. I've been paying more attention to when it happens, and it will occur when there is a switch from 3G to LTE. Clearly this phone has problems switching between the two. After I lose service the only way to get it back is to reboot the phone. Short term solution is to disable LTE, which will eliminate the problem. Of course, the iPhone 5 shouldnt' be advertised as an LTE phone if it doesn't work properly! This is the first time I'm very unhappy with an Apple product. I know people will say this is a network issue, and I agree that LTE coverage is spotty. But the phone should still be able to manage switching between 3G and LTE much better. Should've just stuck with my reliable iPhone 4.

I think its not a hardware problem. Because my SGS3 also had the same problem. I lived in mississauga. When i check Telus LTE coverage i'm definitely in the coverage, but i consider myself lucky if i can catch 5% of my daily usage in LTE network.....

Hey buddy !! finally I got LTE on iPhone 5 bell carrier ,I phone bell costmer service fix my LTE ,them give a reason is the iphone 5 from apple store the Bell no guaranty you can got LTE only iPhone from Bell,so you guys have to phone Bell ask them reset your network for 4G LTE.
My friend has an iPhone 5 on the Telus Mobility network in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (more specifically in Kanata). His iPhone actually is able to hold a LTE connection depending on the tower we're nearest (his LTE speeds are close to 40 Mbps down and around 20 Mbps up), which makes me wonder if some of the Telus towers have problems broadcasting LTE signals. When we're at the Kanata Centrum (basically the centre of Kanata) he gets almost full LTE signal from Telus (there's a tower within a kilometre of the Centrum), but in several other places in Kanata (not near Kanata Centrum) it depends on the tower. According to the Telus website all of Kanata (and the rest of Ottawa) should have LTE, but the fact that my friend gets LTE with some towers (and is able to hold a LTE connection) and not others almost makes me believe it could be a Telus tower issue.
