I'll give that a try when off work. I went to the gmail help section and tried the 'log in within the next 10 minutes and gmail will recognize your application (Apple Mail)' and that seemed to work for a couple weeks but problem is back.
I'll post back after deleting and see what happens.

seemed to work after deleting but now the problem is back. It seems to be occuring with other accounts in Mail such as my Outlook and other gmail account. I thought it was an 'smtp' problem but it's happening with NON smtp as well.

It's baaaack. Having issues again with Gmail. Was working for the longest time (at least since May) but now is asking me for password.
It's only for 1 of my Gmail accounts so my guess is it has to do with the Application specific password required by Gmail in their 2-step verification.
I'll change the password and post back here.

Changed the 'Application Specific Password' and voila. It's working now.
Don't know why. Gmail must have a timeout feature on these passwords or something?
Anyone have any input on this?

I had problem today setting up gmail account on old iphone. I changed my pw, still will not work on old iphone, worked for awhile on current phone after change and now it has quit and will not recognize new pw (already entered, verified and used). Still working on ipad and imac.
I'll stop fighting it and use the app which is working fine.
