How did you transfer the pictures to the external HD? What are the pixel dimensions of those photos? Did you check the photos on the external before you deleted them from the library? How are you viewing the photos?
What iPhoto and system versions are you using?

I can't really remember :-( I think I exported them and than deleted the pictures from the library. I'm using iphoto '09 and the external is a trekstar. Picture sizes are 57kb, 66kb, 53kb...No, I didn't check the pictures before I deleted them. I know that wasn't very smart, but I didn't expect them to look like this. I open the external and I click on the picture. It shows the pictures in preview.

It appears that you transferred the thumbnail files somehow. Those would have been the image files located in the folder named Data inside the iPhoto Library folder/package.
To export the original files one should use the File â Export â File Export menu option with Kind = Original selected.
Do you have a backup copy of the library from before the transfer? If so restore that and you'll have your photos back at full size.

I don't have a backup copy of the library, I just did one last night. The time machine wasn't on. :-( Is there maybe a program that can recover the pictures? I'm so mad at myself that I did this, because all of my pictures are now useless. Or should I go to an apple store with the external and the mac mini?

There are applications like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage which can search your hard drive for deleted files and recover them if they haven't been overwritten. It can be set to look for just image files. It also runs in demo mode so you can see if it can find the files you want before you have to purchase it.
