This should solve your issue:

I'm sorry, I should have included
"and I actually need to use the .mov because I'm currently working on a film collaboration project, I'm an audio student, and compressing it into a different file type (particularly mp4) messes up the frame rate and thus destroys the timing of all of the audio I have already programed to match the final video format."
but I guess I didn't feel the need ...
anyhow, it turns out my particular quicktime will record and export .mov files which it will also read, and I've used this specific .mov file on another computer both in Pro Tools and in Quicktime, so it's a my comp specific seeming problem which makes me wonder if there is A) something wrong with my quicktime or B) a setting somewhere that I'm not finding.
Unfortunately the Google search I did proved a bit fruitless.

Does it say it jsut cant play them, or does it give a specific message (e.g., it does not have a required codec)? Are the movies playable in a different media player such as VLC (http://www.videolan.org)?

it says ... "could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."
I'm downloading VLC to try now, so we'll see. It is also not showing up in ProTools but it did work in both Quicktime and Pro Tools at the school that I go to.

Yep it works fine in VLC. Thanks for that suggestion... at least this way I can watch it here.

I'm now in the same boat: Created a .mov file from an app called XtraView from my analog video tape camara and cannot get anything to run it? Nice!
