I am experiencing a strange problem with my Messages app in OS X. Today, when I logged into OS X it asked me for my Messages and Facetime credetials which I wrote in the prompt. To my surprise now I find that I won't be able to get my Messages and Facetime from my phone number on my Mac and only through my email. I wonder if Apple changed the way OS X handles their messaging system since Wednesday which was the last time I used my MacBook Pro. The only thing I know is that OS X 10.8.3 is out but I haven't updated to it yet.

Is anyone experiencing this issue and if so, is there a way to fix it?

We're in the same boat. I thought the issue was related to the 10.8.3 update because I noticed it after I updated. Thanks to you, I can rule that assumption out. Maybe you're right about this issue being on Apple's end. I guess we'll have to wait it out.

    Hi,

Ever since OS X 10.8.2  and iOS 6 came out which gave the sync link between Apple ID and iPhone Number people have been reporting that they find they have "Lost" the iPhone Number as a Receive "Alias" or a Send from option in the Mac Version of Messages.

    Several threads

That have new posts Today (my view) satate the problem is slightly different ways and have slightly different ways to solve it.

Most involve removing the Apple ID from the iPhone then cutting the connection to the iMessages eerver before re-adding the Apple ID

    HI,

On the iPhone (or other iOS device) go to Settings > Messages > Send and Receive

The iPhone Number should be greyed out and Ticked  to 1) work and 2) Show up elsewhere

Turning Messages Off or putting it in Airplane Mode cuts the connection to the iMessages Server.

It seems that from this point people's experiences vary as to what is successful.
