Try trashing the preferences file called: com.skype.skype.plist
First quit Skype. Then navigate to the file this way:
Click on the desktop.
Hold the Option key down and click on the Go menu. In the drop down, select Library. in Library, open the Preferences folder. The file is in that folder. Trash it.
Now try Skype.

As with before: I open skype from the Applications list, the skype symbol appears for about 15 seconds and then disappears
I do appreciate your help, do you have any other suggestions?

maybe it would help to uninstall skype via appcleaner (free app) which claims all the data belonging to skype, then empty your trash, maybe reboot your mac and then just try to reinstall skype..
AppCleaner is a small application which allows you to thoroughly uninstall unwanted apps.
Installing an application distributes many files throughout your System using space of your Hard Drive unnecessarily.
AppCleaner finds all these small files and safely deletes them.
Simply drop an application onto the AppCleaner window. It will find for the related files and you can delete them by clicking the delete button.

Downloaded AppCleaner and removed Skype, emptied the trash, reinstalled and unfortunately the result is the same.
Thanks for your help, do you have any other ideas?
