If your profile is right it is your OS that is the issue. You show OS X 10.6.8 but you need OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or newer. Your mid 2011 iMac should be fine. You need to purchase the new OS from the app store, it is not an update.
The alternative is a third party app called airparrot.

Try rebooting router and apple TV with all cables out for 30 seconds.
If that fails have a look at wifi usage with iStumbler and see if if is a channel issue.
It could also be interference from another household appliance.

will give it a try - just to be clear, my itunes home sharing is working - just the mirroring not working
seems like if it were a network issue, would be all or nothing... agree?

Not necessarilly drewstein, mirror seems to be less robust than ordinary airplay and can get knocked out by other electronic items or a clustered network (other nearby wifi taking up local bandwidth). I am not tech enough to help on that but have seen that be the problem. iStumbler may help you find better channels etc.

no dice- rebooted everything - things were working well for about ten minutes, then suddenly drop and back to no mirroring, very frustrating
has always been the same way - if i reboot or restart apple tv or my imac everything resets and works, until it doesn't - makes for a very frustrating experience, and totally unworkable for .. say.. a party where you want to have constant music
any other thoughts? anyone?

I think it is a network issue. What is your network set up and did you look at interference levels with İstumbler? If you get some mirroring occasionally it is unlikely to be the hardware.
