FYI to everyone following this thread - I recently purchased the iOS version of Keynote (now at 1.7.2) to help with evaluating the OS X version of Keynote (still at 5.3). While there should not be any differences between the retail box version of Keynote 5 upgraded through the years to 5.3 and the AppStore version of Keynote 5 upgraded to 5.3 using the AppStore, I now have access to Keynote from both sources for comparison. I have been very busy since Keynote 5.3 came out, but when I find time I will do some more testing and report the results. Thanks for your interest.
I hope this helps everyone. Let me know if you have questions.

SecStage, it runs good. I did the
- themeMetaData copy/paste
method in Keynote 5.3 this morning. Twice. I did keep
in themeMetaData, and no disaster. The order key places it on the Theme Chooser gallery. Also, i used
for the version key. Worked fine.
So... molte grazie. This user-generated Theme trouble has been burning my grits for a several years now, but now I am back in the driver's seat.

Prego, UnivBloopers. I just hope that the rumored iWork refresh circulating around the WWDC13 pre-conference coverage will address both the Theme issue and the Hyperlinking issue.

My eternal and unrequited wish is that we could record a podcast in Keynote and export it as .m4a enhanced audio (instead of hoggishly large video format) with the slides synched in the artwork track. If Keynote could do that, I could get rid of Profcast.

My themes would not save, but now this workaround works great for me...
Go into your Keynote preferences and turning off the following:
( ) Save new documents as packages
( ) Copy audio and movies into document
Then save your theme as usual.
Quit and restart Keynote.
Your new theme should appear.
(Don't forget to change back your above settings in Keynote preferences)
Hope this helps save someone some frustration.
