I have read this entire thread, whew, and although my device's "other" is not as large as some (currently at 1.81gb) I have decided to try to clean some of this out. When I migrated to this iPhone 5 there was already some lingering "other" from my iPhone 4. I am post ios6 btw. Deleting my conversations reduced it greatly, and due to the apps that I use I would not be surprised if a number over 1.0gb is reasonable. However this worries me: I just ran phone clean to see what would happen. It cleared 800+mb and after an iTunes sync my other had grown from 1.71 to 1.81. Running phone clean was the ONLY thing that happened between syncs. So, I removed 800+mb of useless stuff via phoneclean, and immediately I saw an exact increase of 1000mb of "other". I am so stumped.

Did you sync after running phoneclean?

Before and after. Like I said, running phoneclean was the only thing that happened between syncs. This has really sparked my interest, I'll be around. I have been free of warranty in the past so I was able to do a lot more, but I'm not willing to do that on this new phone just yet. I think I'll go ahead and do the dirty on my iPad though just to get a better idea of what I'm not seeing on my iPhone. I'm going to restore the iPad (not worried about losing anything, it's just for my pleasure) with my iPhone 5 backup so they are mirrors and then see what I can find there.

I've been following this thread for a while, and I've tried everything mentioned - I think I've restored my phone six times in one day - and to no avail. However, recently, I went through all my text messages and just deleted attachments (videos, pictures, voice memos, contacts, etc.) that people had sent me via iMessage or SMS and my other went from 4.01 to 1.86. It's tedious, but it actually works, and in a way that makes sense to the brain (there was data on the phone before, now there isn't). I also didn't actually have to delete any important contact, and anything that was stuck in the message that I wanted, I just saved to the phone for a fraction of the space.

Ok, so after restoring my iPad from a backup of my iPhone, I was not able to see the same amount of "other" data. My iPhone is still weing in around 1.76gb and my freshly restored iPad only came in at 570(ish)gb. I'm ready to try a full restore on my iPhone, not really worried about losing anything, the irreplaceable stuff is in the cloud after all...

I tried this and it worked really well, freed up a ton of space, however now my music won't play right. It says it was all loaded back in fine, an they work when I play them on the computer, but when I try to play the songs on my phone it will randomly scroll through most of them, pick one and start playing it. Half of the songs just seem to not work anymore on my phone for whatever reason. I've tried re-syncing it, turning it on and off. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Most who have tried this fix end up with the same result with some music not playing back properly. I suspect those who claim it works have not found the broken songs yet. You will have to connect your iPhone to your computer and iTunes library to delete and resync your music.

I don't think it really worked well if it screwed up your music...

Each app you have on the phone or ipod stores documents/data. Did a test by removing Facebook from my iphone because it said there was additional 26mb of data (seperate from 43.3mb app size) stored on the phone. Once I deleted the app--yes--the bar telling how much space was being used for apps went down--but the most important was that the size of my "other" data went down. It doesn't seem that IOS allows you to clear any data--sort of like clearing your browser's history. You might want to find third party app to do that.

Unfortunately everybody keeps following those steps and not reading any of the feedback first... 1 post telling you it will work, 39 pages telling you it wont.

I had to do a system restore on my phone. Some people got away with just re-syncing all their music, but my iPhone froze everytime I tried so I just plain never got that far.

it removed other but my music wouldn't play. tracks did nothing.
I removed all my music to reload it all.
the first tracks I reloaded brought back all of the other. ALL of it.
Im done with it at this point.
restore is next I guess.

This was a serious help! I've been trying for forever to find a way to decrease my "other" section on my iphone, i went from 2.5 GB down to 100 MB.
