Griffter18, I have had several problems with the movie player. The last time I watched a movie I had to reboot the ipad 4 times. Out of frustration, I just stopped using the ipad for movie watching.
Here's what I recall for the video player:
- Wrong art work for the movies
- Player will just stop and exit for no reason
- Player will lock up, can't stop the video, need to reboot
- Player will not finish loading from shared library
Oh, my wife also stopped using her ipad for movies. We had better luck with the 8player app.

Speaking of movies. I only use Home Sharing for MP3 music, but we have a Synology NAS box (running some customized linux setup) which has some converted movies on it. For playback of those video files to an Apple TV3 we use OPlayer (as other things were giving us trouble or plain old didn't work).
I can't test right now if that works with Home Sharing, but I figured I'd mention it as it supports a bunch of movie formats and file systems.
In our case we OPlayer on the iPad connect to a folder on the hard drive with user name & password, and stream it to the AppleTV3. Only quirk is that after starting playback of the remote file in OPlayer, music plays on the Apple TV, and you have to turn airplay mirroring on (double tap home button, swipe all the way left to brightness control, tap airplay, turn mirroring on) then video is shown remotely.
Might be worth a shot if you can just play movies that way, if it connects to user > movies or some other folder.

here is what i did to make it work; i read this whole forum, along with others, but i finally got it on my windows computer.
add an outbound rule for itunes in windows firewall; inbound is enable by default, but i had to create outboud manually
sign out of home sharing in itunes
sign out of home sharing on your idevice
open itunes and turn on home sharing
sign in on idevice
connect to shared library

I agree-- with mine too-- a temporary solution. I have to sign-out, sign-back-in every day or even several times/day PLUS search in shared mode CRASHES the app… Really needs attention!

Hello, I work myself the open ports on the router using the Home Sharing. hit below the instructions I found on the Apple support page.
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu >System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
- Block all incoming connections
- Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.

Thanks very much but I'm getting this disconnection to home share as well as the inability to search on shared files or shared music on the iPad. And I have no firewalls.

Just bought a shiney new iPad two weeks ago - must agree, Apple needs love here - Video ( app on iPad to play video ) connects < 75 % of the time, when it does connect never has the entire library NOR does something as simple as paid download subscriptions appear under the correct listing ( movies as tv shows, seasons split up etc ).
From reading this post I must also question, does this really function ?
I know in the past it did work well - so many changes over the years yet no true functional working.

Thanks for this. Signed out of Apple ID for Home Sharing on iPhone, then signed back on. It worked for me. I was connected to iTunes at the time, though I'm not sure it had any effect. Using iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.2, Windows 7, iTunes 126.96.36.199

I confirm --- me, too - no improvement with iOS 6.1.3 --- in fact, while before it would only crash when I was doing a search (after signing-out and signing-in…) NOW when I try to scroll by touching (for example) an album starting with the letter "T" or "Z"--- crash!!!
So nothing was done here and it is the same or worse than before… Rather incredible! I'll file a bug report.
