Q: How to find carrier of iphone 4

I got an iphone 4 from a relative from another country and when I try to activate it with an AT&T and T-Mobile sim, it would say SIM Not Valid.

Aslo the IMEI shows on the activation screen but ICCID is unknown. Does anyone know how I can find out what carrier it is? Or how I can get it factory unlocked to use for T-Mobile.

you must contact the carrier it is locked to. you may ask your family you got it from

Problem is I can't get into contact with him because he's on leave so I have no clue what carrier to contact

Google or Post its Model no. as printed on the back cover. Will give you rough idea.
