How can I determine if my dual processor G5 can be upgraded with a quad core processor?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

It can't. Macs processors can't be upgraded. Furthermore, you have a PowerPC-based Mac, and those Macs were discontinued in 2005, so there aren't new PowerPC processors

Like mende1 said, the processors cannot be upgraded. You could, however, find yourself a G5 quad logic board with processors and swap out your existing hardware, but that is quite a task to do and would probably cost more than simply buying an old G5 quad tower. The best you can do is to upgrade your memory to it's fullest (4~8GB, depending on the machine) and upgrade your hard disk to a current model. A "cheap" SSD would make a good upgrade, but you won't be able to get past the 1.5GB/s SATA barrier.

    Cheers

    Thanks!

I didn't think it was feasible but never hurts to ask. I use mine in m y recording studio, there is simply nothing as stable as a good old G5. I may do the purchase of a G5 with quad. I am unashamedly sold on Mac's.

If you go with the Quad, make sure you get one close to the end of its production life cycle(August 2006) - The single pump is the MOST reliable compared to the DUAL pump which gums up inside and causes all sorts of overheating problems.

You will find the single pump Quads around months April-August 2006. I have the single pump and for almost 1 year now it has not leaked not one iota, but I also owned dual pump LCS Quad G5s and while they didn't leak, they caused problems with the processors as one core was 15-20 degrees higher than the other one.

    That is false information.

G5 processors cannot be upgraded. Every other Mac with a non-soldered CPU can be upgraded.

    That is false information.

There are several vendors that still sell G3 and G4 upgrade CPUs.

A G5 Quad is not stable. They run very hot, its water cooling system is very unreliable and prone to leaks that can destroy the logicboard and CPUs.

they caused problems with the processors as one core was 15-20 degrees higher than the other one.

That is normal in all computers, even Intel ones.
