Try powering off the phone and then back on and see if exchange works.
I've had that issue a couples of times for user here at my work.

thanks Razmee209, I tried that but it didn't work. I haven't been able to make the initial connection yet so I'm still at square one

Just enter the info and then click done, even if it gives you the error message, then power it off and back on.

Razmee209, thanks for tips. As it turns out the iPhone5 has a history of problems syncing with Exchange. There's no known solution, you just have to keep adding/deleting and trying to connect over and over. I was fed up, got on the phone with Verizon to return the phone and while I was on hold, wa-la, it worked! I haven't had any problems with it since then. You would think the Tier I helpdesk customer service team would be aware of this and be able to better explain it to customers. Oh well, all is well that ends well
