I have my channel strip set to 0.0, any time I play a G or a B note on my M-Audio Keystation 49e, only in certain octaves, the channel strip volume drops to -9.1.

It does NOT happen when I play the caps lock keyboard in Logic, so it must be my keyboard, but I have no idea what to do. I've unplugged it and plugged it back in, cleared settings etc. According to the manual the keyboard should retain any programming after being turned off anyway.

The volume fader also seems to have stopped working. I'm thinking it's just old and needs to be replaced. I'm running OS X v10.7.5, and the last update for this keyboard on the M-Audio site is for v10.7.4 so maybe I'm one version late?

How can I tell if the keyboard is sending some strange signal on the G and B keys? How can I tell if the thing is just worn out?

Going nuts in Austin,

Thanks!

Did you try initializing the keyboard, or is that what you mean by "cleared settings".

It's possible this is a control surface issue, go up to the top left Logic Pro menu, select preferences, select Control Surfaces, select Bypass All Control Surfaces.

    To see what's being re

Record a MIDI sequence using the G and B keys along with a few others for comparison, use the default key command  "Apple key   0" (zero)  to open the list editor, make sure nothing is filtered except additional info.

You will probably see the information there.

p.s. when I was on the road playing I used to enjoy coming to Austin, great music town. Still have scars from the mosquitos there!

    Hi

    (Not Pancenter, but...)

OK, sure enough, there is control data on the G and B keys I'm playing. For those notes the Event List shows a Status of "control" and Length/Info says "Volume".

    snip

WHA??? How do I clear those controls? Would those controls on those keys cause the volume fader to not work?

In Logic, MIDI CC7 volume is hard-wired to control the volume fader of a given channel.

One could sort out a MIDI CC7 filter in the Environment, but really you need to consult the keyboard manual to find out how to re-program the offending keys/control knobs etc.

What CCT says... If it's doing it in Garageband as well your keyboard is in fact, sending out CC data with (or instead of) note on.

Your keyboard manual should have the procedure listed that will initialize (set to factory defaults) the Keystation.

Did you try resetting all controllers...

From the User Guide for your keyboard....

If you find there is an effect on a voice that you do not want, rather than having to worry about what that effect may be, you can send a “Reset All Controllers” MIDI message to set all effects to 0. To send a Reset All Controllers message:

Press the Advanced Functions button to get the keyboard into Edit Mode.
Press the Black Key above C3 (named C# 3), representing “RESET ALL CONTROLLERS.”
Edit Mode will exit, and there will no longer be any effects on the voice, allowing you to start from scratch.

According the M-Audio website there are no drivers for your keyboard as it is a class compliant keyboard that doesn't require drivers...

    Operating System(s):
Mac OS 10.1.5, Mac OS 10.2.8, Mac OS 10.3.6, Mac OS 10.3.7, Mac OS 10.3.8, Mac OS 10.3.9, Mac OS 10.4.0, Mac OS 10.4.1, Mac OS 10.4.2, Mac OS 10.4.3, Mac OS 10.4.5, Mac OS 10.4.4, Mac OS 10.4.6, Mac OS 10.4.7, Mac OS 10.4.8, Mac OS 10.4.9, Mac OS 10.4.10, Mac OS 10.4.11, Mac OS 10.5.1, Mac OS 10.5.2, Mac OS 10.5.3, Mac OS 10.5.4, Mac OS 10.5.5, Mac OS 10.5.6, Mac OS 10.5.7, Mac OS 10.5.8, Mac OS 10.6.3 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.3 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.4 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.4 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.5 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.5 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.6 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.6 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.7 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.7 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.8 64-Bit, Mac OS 10.6.8 32-Bit, Mac OS 10.7, Mac OS 10.7.1, Mac OS 10.7.2, Mac OS 10.7.3, Mac OS 10.7.4

    Release Notes:
This device is class compliant and does not require driver support for OS X

Therefore I will suggest you quit Logic, delete the Control Surfaces Preferences, restart Logic and see if that cures things...

    1. In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
    2. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    3. Press the Go button.
    4. <edit> If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.

There's no reset or initialize function in the manual, other than to say I can re-install drivers. BUT OS versions that support the driver for this keyboard are older than my OS.

Yep... looks like there is no way to "initialise" the keyboard.

A long shot, but are you sure that it is only those two keys that transmit CC7 messages, and not a dodgy slider control that happens to transmit errant messages every now and again?

Do those two keys transmit note messages as well or?

I would've tried the Keystation on the friends computer. I can't help but think you're stuck in "Edit" mode as those two keys have certain functions when the keyboard is in edit mode.
