Try to remove iTunes and re-install it, rather than updating it.
If it doesn't work, and if you are on WINDOWS. You could try to see if iTunesMobileDevice.dll has been disabled or corrupted. (Re-installed iTunes should help)
And don't worry. Your iTunes Library won't be affected because it is in a separate directory. and is NOT affected by the update/remove/install of iTunes.

I tried all of the above, nothing worked. I called Tech support and got the run around. Guess i'll need to drive into Houston to an Apple store for help. (100 miles away)Geez, I was contemplating purchasing an IPhone, with problems like this will it be worth it?

Same problem with no results....and more questions than answers from support. Seriously becoming frustrated with Apple and their ability to help the consumer.
