Excellent, glad it's sorted out for you. I rolled back my changes and applied 10.8.3 but it still didn't fix it, so I had to set up the override again. I've updated my post to suggest that people try updating OS X first, though: http://ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-quality -of-an-external-monitor

Did anyone have to uninstall the fix first?

Confirmed, 10.8.3 solved the hdmi issue for me.

Unfortunatly the 10.8.3 did not solve my MDP to VGA issue. Still bad colours and almost no grey. Same problem with the MacMini. (But no problem when running Windows on same monitor.)

Update did not fix it for me with an external monitor using a display port, the edid override however did. Can not believe this isn't a standard check box in an advanced displays tab.

workaround on ireckon.net solved this bug for me on a retina macbook pro as well.

I can confirm also that solution from ireckon.net solved this problem: I have a late 2013 rmbp 13 inch with Philips 272P4 (2560x1440) connected via a DP-miniDP cable. Forcing OSX to send RGB signal completely solved this problem.
