All I can say is today I updated my software from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 my mac has been working perfectly over the years..not a problem and since this upgrade my screens are black. I've not added any firmware or 3rd party software. I tried several ways to get it up and running ..from going to sleep mode taking it out..etc but nothing..then suddenly mac screen lit up and was able to copy the important files I needed. Unfortunately I didn't think to tuna system disc and check it and when I rebooted then screen came back black again and have not been able to get it back. I'm at a loss now :-(

our issue in this topic is almost the same: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4895074
i have a hdd installed in the optibay, and osx unmounts it every hour. a reboot helps, but the drive gets unmounted again.
i pasted logs in the topic linked above.
i will roll back to 10.8.2 that was working fine - 10.8.3 introduced changes to the sata bus

I have EXACTLY the same set up as you , MBP mid 2009 I have a Scopio Black Drive . Downgraded EFI to 1.6. I installed installed OSX 10.8.3 three from app store and my MBP locked up each time/would not boot . I finally got it working again. I reinstalled Original ML 10.8.0 from a USB. Have not lost any files or settings. It works fine, just need to update to 10.8.2 I think I will leave 10.8.3 alone until they fix the problem or until we find a fix for it. If I find a solution I'll let you know.

I have exactly the same problem.
I've a mid 2011 iMac with 12GB of RAM, and two hard drives, one Crucial M4 SSD and as secondary drive, the original 500GB hard drive.
Until the 10.8.3 update, the iMac worked really fine, but since this update, when I power off the iMac and a couple of hours later I power on, the gray screen with apple logo and the gray wheel appear.
Then, I use a 10.8.2 Time Machine backup and it back to work fine, so clearly it's a problem of the update.
The weirdest thing is that I know other users with the same configuration and they haven't this problem.

well ..upgrading the EFI to 1.7 makes 10.8.3 to install without any problem, but the SSD issue with that firmware persist!
richard stephenson can you please provide me the EFI 1.6 downgrade? i cannot find the aluminum.macbook.pro.recovery.dmg anymore..
