When I bring up a new message to send, I can select which of the three servers to use (smtp.me.com, smtp.mac.com, iCloud). The iCloud choice says "(iCloud, offline)"
When I click on the connection doctor, it is green lights for all three servers.
When I click on the "Edit SMTP server list", I don't touch anything, but I see that I am using default ports and using SSL. No authentication.

I now have several messages on my laptop in the Outbox folder. That is where they go when I attempt to send them. Online, at iCloud, there is no outbox folder.
When I attempt to send a message from my laptop, I still get the message "Cannot send using the server smtp.me.com. The sender address was rejected by the server." I am given the choice edit, try later or try with selected server. If I choose edit, the draft message will appear online in my iCloud draft folder.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Delete you iCloud account in Mail's Accounts preference pane and then add it back. It should automatically set the correct server as you reenter your info.
