Use usb with that printer until this gets sorted out. It appears to be an issue.

firewire is the only option. It was a $4000 epson printer... a network card would have been $500 more...
to make it USB capacabile too would have added $10 to thier cost... My Epson scanner has both...
Gotta luv em....

Contact Epson. Perhaps they have a workaround.

Try resetting the printing system.

Thanks! Resetting my printing system was a good idea but......
when I added my printer ( system firewire saw the printer) my computer crashed.
I was able to get my Macpro to see my macbook via firewire transfer..
so some firewire works. I assume the firewire card in my 7800 is not compatible.
I guess I should chuck my printer in the landfill and run out and buy buy a new one.
I'm terrified to see what happens when I plug my video camera into my mac pro.
It's hard enough to make a living without having to face issues like these....
I'm a professional photographer... just purchased a new macpro and Adobe suite....
now I will be working on my old system (macpro 1.1) . I hope apple makes more
money selling phones.... Remember when apple was cool?
I do not love my mac.... its just a few weeks old and ... I have no place to plug a
USB3 device into ... or a thunderbolt.

Try to isolate the issue.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try a restart.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Please post the crash log.

This is a waste of time... crash logs ... backup .. safemode.. Apple created this mess and firewire
won't work until Apple posts a patch. Don't spin your wheels .....
