Refigerate the phone for at least two hours. Then, put it in Airplane mode and turn off Wifi and Bluetooth. Next, Wrap it in two plain white paper towels with the emobossed side out and pack it in organic, Long Grain Rice (Chicken flavor) and place in the oven at the lowest setting for exacty 4 miutes, and 47 seconds. After you remove the phone from the Oven, the rice and paper towels, switch it off and do the Irish Jig while reciting the Preamble and holding a candle stick in your left hand for ten to 15 minutes. When you turn it back on, it will work!
Oh, it must be between the hours of 7:00 pm and 9:30 while the cat is outside.

Let me tell about my experience... After I've tried everything without luck, I put my phone in the freezer... yes into the freezer, near the icecream... turned off, in ariplane mode for two hourse...
When I turned on.. what do you think... The Wifi now was ABLE to turn on, and show me my wifi network .. I't worked for a cup of minutes until the phone takes its natural temperature... WTFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I'm amazed that it worked... but just for minutes... now I'm able to turn wifi on but it stays there scanning and nothing happens...
So.... I have several Apple products but my next phone will be a Samsung S3 or S4 ... Stop using iPhone because I'm dissapointed with the -out of answer - policy of Apple.

I´m moving forward to galaxy too, but be carefull. I posted it today and some applemaniacs got crazy. I think they live at north pole or something, or they only use their iphones at the refrigerator.
And by the way, my "solution" only lasted for a couple of hours. Now my device is with the problem again.

Before we all put our iPhones in the refrigerator, it seems just a temporary solution even like just put off the phone for a longer time. Did had the same problem and the fridge worked well for 15 minutes till the device was back on normal operating temparatures. After this I know it was not a software error so I bring it to a specialist and he just replaced a small cable near the antenna, now its works fine again since a few days.

I had the same problem on 4s, wifi grey out. I also read the article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US but do these steps:
1) turn on airplane mode
2) turn off iphone
3) wat 5 minutes
4) turn on iphone
5) turn on wifi !!! eureka (wifi no more grey out)
6) exit airplane mode
all work, also update to 6.1.3, all on icloud.

I am experiencing the same problem, wifi grey out. I've read all your tips and the 1st time that i encountered this problem, I fixed it by turning my phone off for a couple of mins 30 mins. I think and when I turned it on the wifi grey out was fixed. But for the same week the problem occured again and when i tried to turn it off and turn it on again, the problem was not fixed. I tried roberto275's tip, I restored it and update it to the latest one which is 6.1.3 but at the end the problem was not fixed. I'm getting frustrated about my phone. Please I need help! My phone was bought last October 2012 and is still under the 1-year warranty period.

I called Apple support and was told that my phone (bought in December) was no longer under warranty. I was told that they could not help me with the greyed out wifi issue unless I purchased an extended plan fro $70 or a one time help fee of $20. This is stupid. We buy these phones trusting in Apple (with a good rep) but I am beginning to second guess their rep. Every other device in this house including 3 other iphone 4s and even friends that visit with iphone 4s connect. One out of all these is greyed out. To me that is not a software or upgrade glitch it is a glitch in the phone. Apple should replace for as much as we pay for these devices.

I can't help appreciate your frustration, but with regard to the warrantee it is clear that their products are warranted for 90 days, unless your purchase an Apple Care / Plus agreement. Many folks also purchase similar agreements from the Retailer where they purchased their iPhone / iPod / iPad, etc. If Apple is offering you the Apple Care Service at this point for $70 I would jump on it. I have purchased quite a number of Apple products which we enjoy thoroughly, however last year I bought an iPod for one of my grandchildren and she dropped it and broke the screen within two-weeks. I had not purchased Apple Care and thus had to pay 90% of the original price and turn-in the broken iPod to get a replacement. My Bad, I won't do that again ...Now I purchase Apple Care with each device.
Now as to your WiFi grayed-out issue, I am not at all certain that your evidence presented assures that it is not a software issue. You of course could be correct, but software does not interact the exact same way among all the various versions of hardware. One iPhone 5 for example can have a different internal modem than the next. Consequently, your problem may still be solved by a software fix. Exchanging the Hardware will be the fastest Fix, and if you can get that done for $70 ...run and do it.

So I thought I'd share my experience. I had the same problem, the wifi button was stuck stuck off. I tried turning it to aero plane mode and turning it off for 20mins. When I tuned it back on it allowed me to turn wifi back on however would just continue to scan for a connection but never actually connect. In the end I resorted to going to settings/general/reset and selecting "erase all content and settings". (this does NOT remove things like pictures, documents and apps from the iPhone) and it fixed the problem. I can now connect to my wif network without a problem.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. APPLE WON'T EVEN HELP ME ON THE PHONE AND I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING FROM THEIR WEBSITES! ugh. I'm guessing you've probably fixed it by now? if so could you please tell us how? thanks :)

There is no other way right now to fix the issue. I tried everything on this forum. If it did work it was only temporary. Apple refused to help over the phone and finally I spoke to someone and when you buy a new product from Apple you have 1 year. They claimed it was on the hardware but it could be a hardware problem. The wifi antena could be bad. So they sent me the information and a repair number. Sent it back to them yesterday. I will post the outcome. Bottom line is you can't fix it yourself. You need a new phone.
