I am also having problems with AirPlay and Home Sharing after upgrading. I called AppleCare and they weren't able to find a solution. I restart ATV3 whenever I want to watch a movie from iTunes or send something to it via AirPlay. I didn't update my ATV2 and it still works like a champ. <sigh>

Quick update: I restored my ATV normally (from ATV menu, not plugging into iTunes) so it reapplied 5.2. I haven't had the problem in two days. I'm still using a dynamically assigned IP address (DHCP) and I'll soon change it to a static IP address. I'll post back if that reintroduces the issue or not.

As some other users have reported:

Homesharing does not function at all since 5.2. This was not an issue until now.

Intermittent streaming from my desktop before 5.2.

This product has progressively become worse.

If you have any PC's on your home network try turning off the windows firewalls. I have a firewall router and do not need both running.  FIXED my home sharing issues.  I have 4 ATV3's WIRED/Wireless, all would loose home sharing connection after ATV went to sleep.

People stop taking it personal if someone is frustrated with the latest updates. Either offer a solution or don't plague the forum with more comments. The goal of these forums is to offer solutions. Anyone having issues with the Apple TV should go to support and explain the problem and see if they can fix it. You might need to take it to the genius bar.

By the way, another bug fix was released. Update as soon as possible.

Excellent point and the latest bug fix did indeed resolve my Airplay issues.

There is no doubt a problem with ATV3 running the new 5.2 update. Absolutely no doubt at all. I'm going to roll mine back to 5.1.1 to try and fix it.

Hi all, Ijust wanted to update this thread .Well I had thought signing out and then back into my apple account fixed it but alas it did not. After a few minutes the same problem  repeated in which my apple tv would just not keep the wireless network , it just lost it again and again so,,,,,, I took my apple tv back to the apple store where I had been to get help on Sunday to no avail. I just insisted that since every other device and computers and ipad , other apple tvs 3rd gen and 2nd gen all worked that  this particular apple tv was defective and I wanted a replacement so lthey did finally give a replacement, I went home set it up without any problems and it  works just fine. BUT I did not update this one, the other one was fresh out of the box and I think the thing updated when I was trying to set it up. So end of story I think I either had a defective apple tv 3rd gen or big possibility that the update did it in .I really think the update is the problem, I have also warned dear hubby to not update the othe 3rd gen ATV as I sure don.t want to repeat this experience.  I think we need to  keep callinf apple and let them know this is a big problem !

Same here. My ATV3 was working just fine until the last update. Not that I wanted to update, mind you. I just couldn't prevent that annoying message inviting me to update to show up every other day. And one day I mistakenly clicked OK. AAaargh. Now the darn box keeps disconnecting from my home network (wired) every time it goes to sleep. Since the 5.2 update, I have to restart the ATV so that it can connect again to the network. Very frustrating. How can I downgrade to 5.1?

Here are some things I tried to fix the intermittent streaming performance with mixed results:

    Power down the AppleTV.

Power down your streaming source (worked more often than not).

    Power down your router.

But the main factor for me was distance. My desktop is located about 5 meters from the AppleTV and router, in another room down the hall. On a good day, the data transfer rate was 1~2mb/sec (use your Activity Monitor if you have a Mac). I've observed anything over 1mb/sec (constant) is sufficient to stream high def content. On a bad day, it drops to around 300~500kb/sec, which would only be good enough to pre-buffer a program if you have the time before watching it. In the worst cases, the transfer rate drops to only 100kb/sec and at this point, any content is unwatchable.

Alternatively, I tried to stream from my notebook (Mackbook Pro) positioned within 2 meters (basically in the same room very close to the AppleTV) and the data transfer rate is consistently around 2~3mb/sec. I can stream HD content and watch it in real time without pausing.

Regarding the homesharing issue, I turned off homesharing on my desktop and logged back in. This eventually worked for me.

    Hope this helps.

After upgrading to 5.2.1 I wasn't able to view my movies or tv shows (I wasn't using homesharing).  I kept getting "can't connect to Apple store" and unable to access account errors.

I found this thread and some others, and was a bit frustraited that there was no clean solution.   I restarted my AppleTV, but didn't want to reset if I didn't need to.  So I tried something simple....

I simply unplugged AppleTV for ~1min, and plugged it back in.  After that it worked fine.

I'm not sure if this will work for anyone else, but it's worth a try since it's easy.

My ATV2's (5.2 update) home sharing is now working. I did everything I could think of to fix this problem but finally I reset my wireless modem and that did the trick. I keep my Comcast cable modem and my wireless modem on all the time for my Nest thermostat but I guess having it on so much locked something up.

My Apple TV 2 is working just fine after the update (5.2.1).  It is much more reliable than it was before the update.  I have been using Airplay for about a day without any issues.  I didn't take any extra steps to get it to work.  I just waited a long time to update.  I usually wait until an update has been available for a few months before I decide to jump on board.  I do a few google searches to see how many complaints I can find.  If I can't find any recent complaints, I assume it should be safe to update.  This method has kept my Apple equipment running well for years.  If you are on the fence about this update, just do it.  It is well worth the wait.  The new screen saver and Up Next feature are great additions.
