Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on

After the obvious causes you are directed to perform an SMC reset. Read all the steps.

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    3. Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro).
    4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    5. Release the power button.
    6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
    7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Still having problems? Replace steps 6 and 7 with the following:

    1. Reconnect just the MagSafe power adapter.
    2. Press the power button to turn on the computer,
    3. Then reconnect the battery.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

I reset the SMC. I can hear it running but the screen is blank and the light on the front is not on. When I shut the computer the light comes on and the fan gets really loud.

If you did everything in the troubleshooting article above, the last step is as follows:

If you tried all of the steps above and the computer still won't turn on, contact Apple technical support (1-800-APL-CARE in the U.S.) or take your computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

Don't bother calling, since you already did everything they will tell you do to. Just schedule a Genuis Bar visit.

Since it is only a few months old Apple will fix it under warranty.

Hey John,     Do you know what could be causing this PROBLEM?  my macbookpro 15" 2008 Late was on and it the power cord came uplugged and I didn't notice it for a day or two and finally plugged it back up because the battery had went all the way down.  But after a full charge it won't turn on. No noise but the Battery green lights are on says full charge on the little green dotted lights on the left side.

Funny how I decide to get a NEW MacBookPro 2013 Retina and a few days later now my MacBookPro goes out.

    myfz6,

This is exactly what mine (same model) did.  Were you able to find an answer?

Hey myfz6, my late 2008 MacBook Pro unibody is doing the exact same thing after I didn't realize it was unplugged.  Full power, full battery now but not a single sign of life.  Did you need a new power supply?  If so, could they replace it at the store the same day or did you need to send it in and wait several days?  Please let us know, thanks.

If someone could please offer advise, I attempted to restart my MacBook (white 2008/2009) while restarting it turned off and is now unable to restart. The battery is out of life but is able to run through power adaptor. I have recently updated to snow leopard also if this makes any difference. Please help!

Same thing happened to me, take it to an apple store around you, book an appointment, they wont charge you at all, it takes them 15 minutes to fix it and thats it! Or try a SMC reset.

I have diagnosed similar problems being the hard drive  not making a good connection with the motherboard.

    Thank you
