Q: External storage device not showing up in finder

I have an imac with an external storage device for back-up.  Up to now when I turned on the device it would show up in Finder.  Now it's not.  I have checked the connections (firewire), restarted the computer but it's not showing up.  What should I do or try?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repair it if possible. If the Disk Utility doesn't find any problems with it, mount it and choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ followed by the drive's name as the path.

I used the Disk Utility.  Repair wasn't available but I did Repair Disk Permisisions and Verify and all checks out fine.  I did this for the iMac's hard drive.  In the utility window only the iMac's hard drive is there.  There are 2 drive icons shown.  One says 74.5 GB ST380023A, which is the computers hard drive and under it is Macintosh HD which appears to be the same thing except for some statistics.  For the top directory the button says "mount" but can't be activated.  The second directory says "unmount" and can't be activated.  I do not see a "Go To" option in finder.

    TRY THIS SOLUTION, EASY!

I'm a GOOD mac user. Not a genius, but pretty good, used it for years.

    BUT SOMEHOW THIS ESCAPED ME:

In the finder, on the left side, scrol down to DEVICES.

Mouse over slowly to the right of that word and it says SHOW/HIDE.

    Well.. Mine were hidden!

    That's it!

I had tried everything under the sun, and had almost given up hope of ever seeing the devices in my finder again....that is, until I found this post. thank you, jeropa71!
