Well something is wrong - to help we actually need details though as we pnly know wha tyou tell us and at this time all we know is that you have iphoto '08 and a problem - we no nothing more about your system or your work flow
Why do you think the space on the internal dick is decreasing?
Do you have an iPhoto library on the internal disk? Is so does it change size when you import? Does the library on the external disk change sie when you import?
What version of iPhoto '08 do you have? Of the OS?
how are you importing the photos?
Any other details that might help a total stranger help you?

I am most happy to get some help with this.
I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8
iPhoto '08 7.1.5 (328)
I only have the iPhoto on my external disk.
Workflow is as folloews:
1. Plug in the iPhone.
2. itunes starts.
3. iPhoto starts and imports thumbnails.
4. When that's done and I press import everything looks fine and the pics are being imported to the library on the external disk.
5. However when I check Finder the disk space on the internal disk on my Mac book is getting smaller. That stops when i press 'abort'.
6. Something has been saved on the internal disk but I cant find any pictures on that drive.

What happens if you let it finish? Could it be that this is temp stroage that goes away on completion?
And are the pictures in iPhoto and does the external disk reflect the disk usage?
Could the disk usage be something other that importing photos? Music? Backing up the phone? ? ? ?

The disk usage should only be the pictures, nothing else is being imported or backed up.
The problem is that there are about 1500 pics + .mov's and there is just no more room o the internal drive to save them and then move to the external.
The pictures are in iPhoto (on the external) and it reflects the disk usage.
Maybe I'll just choose 20% of the pics to import at a time. What's weird is the is the internal disk usage, no new files can be found, it just ticks down.

Yes - try just doing a few and see exactly what is happening - maybe only 10 - just enough so that the disk usage shows
