I have asked this question before and thought I had the answer when it became apparent a rogue script, which I subsequently deleted, was continually searching for a non-existent file,

However on startup this morning from the sound of the chime to the appearance of the 'apple' screen took 75 seconds and then from there to the sign on screen another 20 seconds elapsed.

I have Time Machine permanently on and a floppy disc reader connected but these do not appear to be accessed by the system until the apple screen appears. The only program loaded on startup is iCal and that is not loaded until after sign on.

Just what is the computer doing during that first 75 seconds and is there anything I can do to speed it up?

It cannot be anything to do with memory as I have the max 8GB ram and bags of space on my HD.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Logic Express 9, Mainstage
