allow me to ask a couple of questions......for I have been able to work around this in the past.
first of all is this a new pst file that has just been created for the transition to the mac ?
Are you concerned about contacts ?
Are you concerned about emails ?
Also the email account that you are using or receiving emails into is it pop, imap or http ?
Do you leave copies of the emails on the server ?
Thanks for this, I'll answer your points below
yes I will create a pst file on a memory stick simply for the purpose of getting the information over onot the Mac
I'm not bothered about contacts, to do or calendar, I've managed to get them across via Itunes (I don't really know how but I did it!)
I am very concerned about emails. I have about 10 years of emails all neatly filed in folders by subject and it's these I'm trying to get across to the Mac
My email account is POP and yes I do leave a copy on the server for peace of mind. I my go and delete every 3/6 months
I hope you can help I'm really struggling to get these emails across
I used ths approach once - I created a google account (imap format). I then introduced the gmail account into my outlook. I then migrated an email from my pop account into gmail. I then closed outlook. I then went to the mac side added the gmail account to mail and physically moved the email into mail folders. I am attempting to repeat the process right now.
I made certain that the gmail account was imap......
I moved my received email folders (pop3) to gmails inbox
Eg: filepop moved to gmail:inbox:filepop
structure looked like this gmail:inbox:with a subfolder called filepop
I then added the gmail account to mail on the mac
saw gmail:inbox:with a subfolder called filepop
moved the folder to the cloud and on my mac
* the only thing i noted is duplicates were deleted by gmail
test it out - i had no problems - but you want to look for your unique needs
ps found it easier then alot of other options, thunderbird and conversion software
yes, i repeated the process this morning and everything was good. Ive used this process in the past to keep everything organized - its almost seemless and keeps everything in order (folder wise) for migration
On outlook, I keep my documents by category and year
Eg: Soccer Folder 13
Baseball Folder 13
Baseball Folder 12
I have also migrated the send folder, inbox as well but naturally i make certain they are folder moves.
So basically, create or use your gmail account, check its settings...make certain that it is a IMAP only account via the internet interface - gmail:settings (it wont work if gmail is pop3)
Then add the account to outlook, making certain it shows up as a imap not a pop3
Once gmail was created/updated, confirmed as Imap and added to outlook
I copied the folder placing it into the gmail inbox (it gets created as a sub-folder to inbox as you would expect)
leaving the original folders where they resided (backup)
I then checked the folder to confirm there existance on gmail as sub-folders on outlook (there where i noted that duplicate emails were dropped).....eg: using a rss reader or something similar I forward copies of information multiple times - duplication. once I confirmed the data integrity
Then it was just adding gmail to mac mail copying the folder over to where I desired
on my mac or in the cloud or both,
I have used this both ways mac to pc and pc to mac (in the past) and I have only retested the pc outlook to mac mail this morning
the only key issue you may encounter is email accounts (sends/receives)
Eg lets say I have a Yahoo.com or a Live.com email account on the outlook side and you are migrating all to Icloud.com or me.com only
(meaning no yahoo or live mail account set up in mac mail - you may not have that old account link to resend the email through that service)
basically, I backed up my outlook completely - creating a pst on windows or a back up on mac
I created a google mail account in imap format....
I then introduced that gmail account into my outlook client
I moved several emails from my original email account (lets say yahoo or msn) to my gmail email
account folders - let say inbox on the gmail side and exited the outlook client.
I then introduced my gmail email account into my mac mail client
I retrieved the messages I had moved into gmail on the mac mail client side (send/receive)
I the placed them into a mac mail folder - which is in essense mbox format
Upon completion of this control test.....
I then repeated the process with folders on my outlook client, which worked sucessfully as well.
upon making certain all was good, I deleted the gmail account (intermediary point of transfer)
and basically stopped using office all together and just used mac mail,
You can do one thing. Export Outlook emails into EML format and import all eml files inside Mozila Thunderbird (it allows importing of eml and creates .mbox store file). Carry the mbox file on mac platform and open with Apple Mail. For bulk conversion of outlook pst to eml, you may use easy outlook pst converter application.
