This music came from your computer in the first place.  It should still be there and should be included in your regular backup copy of your comptuer.

You may be able to purchase a third party program to do this.

The original computer I used to load the music was stolen. I installed iTunes on my new laptop, and backed up my phone. I also purchased a new iPhone 4, which I'm trying to install all of my media on.  All the music is still on my old damaged iPhone 4, but I can't figure out how to upload the music into my iTunes so I can transfer it to the new phone.

Use the backup of your old computer, certainly it was not stolen as well.

iDevices have never been backup devices.

If you no longer have the computer with the content on it, there is no backup, and the iPhone with the content on it is not functional, the content is gone.

Take this as a life lesson to stop being a dunce and ensure you have backups of your important media and files.

Regarding the post above, thank you for your contribution, however, is it necessary to be so rude? the question was straightforward enough; surely it requires a politeful response? if people who are not so apple savvy as you irritate you, why take the time to offer advice?

It would seem reasonable for Apple to devise a method that enables consumers to transfer all material from an old device to itunes, not simply purchased items. The reason why, i'm sure is, that the current method ensures those who are not able to transfer to have to buy the whole lot again this time through itunes, not a CD collection. This is surely Apple's fault, not the fault of the consumer?

Apple's ecosystem deliberately makes it hard for you to simply copy the content from the device into a computer. This is one of the reasons Apple were successful in getting the content owners on board as Apple's devices don't make it trivially easy for friends to swap content with each other. If you backup your data then you won't have a problem. If you haven't backed up your data then third party tools should be able recover it for you. Apple will let you have most of your past purchases again for free. Where they can't, such as with audiobooks, it is the content owners who stand in the way...
