I have FCE 3.5 and it will not install on Mountain Lion. Did you start with a higher version, or how did you get it to work? The installer fails with an error -- Power PC programs are no longer supported.

I'm no expert but I did have problems with 4.0. I have some older software that I tried to install and got the same error. As far as Final Cut, I have upgraded to FCPX and I am glad I did. It's not cheep but what a great improvement over FCE. I use it with Motion 5 and I am doing things I could never do with FCE.
So my guess would be that it is too old to work with the newer versions of Mountain Lion and I know for a fact the Apple doesn't support it any more.

Thanks for the update. Just one more question - Were you able to import any of your FCE projects into FCPX?
FCE cannot do this.
You may be able to use FCPro and use an app called FCP 7toX that might work but it's pushing the envelope.
Your 3.5 will not work but 4.0.1 has had some success.
As ARTWW explains: FCP X is the supported Apple NLE and it works with current OS.

Just noticed this old thread and decided to add my pennyworth.
I use a 2008 iMac running OS X 10.8.4 with FCP 7, FCP X and Aperture installed (together with many other apps).
I keep all my old apps as disk images (on my hard drives) as they load much quicker than from the original DVDs.
I have just installed FCE 4 in less than a minute and also the 4.0.1 update in about 15 seconds.
Whilst I haven't tested it comprehensively, it opened and imported some AVCHD clips successfully and I was able to set I/O points and create a quick project with a few transitions.
So it would appear to be working OK.
The only puzzling thing is that I am sure I tried installing FCE a few months ago, in response to a similar thread, and it failed! However, as my memory can be pretty dodgy at times I may have dreamt it.

Further to my above info:-
I have now successfully exported the mini project both as a QT Movie in AIC/Linear PCM and also as a QT Conversion to H.264/AAC
Regarding my hazy recollection that an earlier attempt at installing FCE 4 may have failed, the only difference to my computer is that I recently installed CleanMyMac 2 and used it to trash a number of redundant cache files etc.
