I am trying to install Windows 8 on my early/mid-2011 MacBook Pro. I am using the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide, but when I get to the area of partitioning the hard drive, I am choosing around 60GB and clicking next. After a minute or so, it is telling me that this drive cannot be partitioned?

I am not as savvy on the Mac as PC (switched from the Dark Side in early 2011), so I was wondering if the MacBook hard drive needs degragmented so that

When Boot Camp Assistant shows that your hard drive couldn't be partitioned, it gives more information about the problem. Try partitioning the drive again and tell me what the whole message is

Okay, just tried again, and it says: "Your disk could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning the disk." It then gives me an OK button with no further explanation.

I don't know if this is preventing it, but I am using a 160 GB External Hard Drive. Must it be a 8GB Flash Drive? Thought I read in another support forum it could be a EHD as long as it was 8GB or greater?

I'm not sure what you want to tell me. Are you telling me that you want to install Windows on an external drive? In this case, that's not possible, but from what you say, I think that you are using that external drive to store the Windows support software; am I right?

Apart from that, With that information, it's difficult to know what's failing. Run Boot Camp Assistant again until you see that error, and then, open Console (it's stored on /Applications/Utilities), an app that provides access to the log files of your Mac and where we can get more information about errors. Then, search for errors related to Boot Camp and copy them here

Okay, from the Console, here is the remark:

"Boot Camp Assistant: Selected disk's capacity: 319GB, used space: 151GB."

That is the only Boot Camp reference in the Console. I am only trying to partition 40GB for Windows 8 to run on the MacBook Pro.

I was using an External Hard Drive as a Flash Drive, going to try a 8GB flash drive next.

    Thanks for your help.

To store the Windows support software, a 8 GB USB drive is enough so you won't waste 160 GB of the external drive. However, this is not the problem.

The fix will be difficult because OS X doesn't specify the problem. First of all, try reinstalling OS X 10.8.3 with the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640

Have you encrypted the hard drive?

Run a Verify disk and if needed a Repair disk in Disk Utility. you may also waht yo run Verify & repair permissions also kin DU.

Usually this only happens when the drive it to full and or when OS X/BCA can't move data around on the OS X side. BCA must compact the data that is on the OS X partition so it can allocate clean free space to the Windows partition. If it can't move the data around it can't partition the drive.

There was also a bug in earlier version of either OS X or BCA (I forget which) that would not allow the creation of any other partitions on the drive. The work around for that was to shrink the OS X partition by only a few hundred MBs to about a GB. Then you could repartition the drive.

Backup your user data files off the machine to a storage drive (not only TimeMachine as it might fail to restore) and disconnect everything else.

Reboot the computer and hold command option r keys down (wired or built in keyboard) on a Ethernet conection to your router or modem (power off/on modem to reset) use Disk Utility there to Repair your internal drive.

    Reboot the machine normally.

Use Disk Utility and select the internal Macintosh HD partition, then click Erase Free Space (Zero) and move the slider one space to the right and Erase. You can't erase the entire Macintosh HD while booted from it, so your data is safe, this will only erase the FREE space. This will take some time so let it complete.

Next head to BootCamp and attempt to partition again, if it fails, then see this User Tip of mine to shift OS X data up.

BootCamp: "This disc can not be partitioned/impossible to move files."

If your still having problems, it's likely a bad drive and or a gltich in the 10.8.3

I attempted another installation of Windows 8 with Boot Camp, after re-installing 10.8.3.

Once again it failed, but I went into the console and grabbed all the remarks from the previous few minutes:

When you say the install of Windows 8 failed do you even get to the part where the system Reboots into the Windows installer?

You have a Problem with your system. Could be hardware, could be software.

When you say you Reinstalled 10.8.3 did you do that over the top of you current install? The Whole OS or the update to 10.8.3?

    Didn't really want to

I had to reboot into the recovery partition and run disk utility and repair disk/permissions and now it works
