Many thanks for this.....****** off Apple online 'support' is unable to provide us all with acknowledgement of issue, and their 'official' fix!
iTunes has always seemed to have a mind of its own over the many years I have used it....frustration is a common challenge with it making mostly unwanted changes at will, or on updating of versions

I just dumped iTunes...reinstalled and reloaded my library. It took a bit to reload it all but all's fixed.

Went to the Apple store today to try to find out what happened.
The guys at the store was really short with me, totally ignored me mid-sentence when another customer came up, and told me it was probably just a glitch.
I'm glad we got this issue fixed, but I'm getting pretty fed up with Apple....

Here is my take on the thing...
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

Save yourself the frustration ...... uninstall iTunes (completely) , reinstall and reload your library. You'll feel much better and you'll think to yourself ,"Now why the **** didnt I do that earlier?"

I have the same problem, just today. It was working fine yesterday. I tried renaming that library file and that didn't work. I had a ton of music so I fear if I uninstall/reinstall it could take way too long.

Try this. It is what solved it for me. I wish there was a way I could get it at the top of the forum.
A detailed tutorial:
- Go to the iTunes folder (For me, it's Libraries/Music/iTunes
- Delete the file "iTunes Library.itl" (You could also just put it in a backup folder in case this doesn't work for you)
- Rename "iT 1.tmp" to "iTunes Library.itl". Even though you change the extension, it still works.
- Open up iTunes and you should be back to normal! To be sure, do a search for the last thing you imported.

After reloading podcasts and apps onto my iTunes library the stupid thing deleted everything again. So I deleted iTunes and re-downloaded the newest iTunes. Seems to be ok now. I know it really ***** that you have to waste a lot of time doing this but it might save you a few headaches. Good luck

I did end up doing the reinstall but I also ran into issues with that. Upon reinstall and re-importing my entire music library some of the files came over to iTunes with blank artist and album titles and I had to manually key in each one. I also had to re-delete all duplicates, which ended up being extremely time consuming. All my playlists are still missing too because I had not backed up in quite a while, which is my own fault. I've found the new iTunes is riddled with issues though, many of which I am still dealing with.

I just reopened my iTunes today after spending hours reorganizing last night and all my music is gone AGAIN. Beyond frustrated.
