Have you activated iMessage and Facetime? You must be connected to a cellular data network to activate them for the first time, as the activation process requires exchanging a hidden SMS message.

Airplane mode turns off the transmitters in iPhone to protect the airplane from radio signals. So if you are in airplane mode wifi will not be working. Hence the reason that neithe Message or FaceTime works.

Why are you in airplane mode?

Yes, but you can turn on WiFi after setting airplace mode.
