Apple restored my phone from new. I did not load my phone from backup as I did the previous times. The battery life precentage appears to be functioning as normal and my phone has not abruptly shut down. Thanks for your suggestion.

I've been having this issue for a couple weeks as well. iPhone 4. I had been having some performance issues so I cleared the phone and set it up as a new device. No restore. Since then, speed has been good, but it's been crashing at least once a day. plug it in and it shows 40-50% battery. I'm not sure if wiping it and setting it up as a new device will help or not since I just did that recently. Perhaps something got hosed in the re-install?

It's possible that your battery gauge is out of calibration. The way I fixed a similar problem. After it shuts down with apparently sufficient state of charge, wait 15 minutes. Then hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears. You may see a low battery warning briefly, but keep holding. If the Apple doesn't appear within 30 seconds then the battery really is that low; charge it to 100%, then fully discharge it, then charge to 100% again.
If the phone comes back on after holding HOME and SLEEP and shows substantial battery let it run all the way down until the phone shuts off and stays off (below 3%). Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger.

I can get it to reboot like that, but usually within a couple minutes it will die again, and I can't get it to restart. If I plug it in and let it restart, then it'll be good for the rest of the day. it seems the act of plugging it in somehow fixes the issue.

I have not had an issue with the phone since the apple store restore. Something was corrupting the O/S.

Good to know. I'll try another restore. Thanks.

One more note, I think an app I downloaded corrupted mu O/S. I didn't reload all my apps at once. There was one app that I feel was the cause, but I will not name it to prevent a lawsuit. I will say if you have an app that doesn't respond to the commands you press, I suggest you don't reload it.
