Why does it prioritize EDGE on my iPhone 5 even though there is 3G signal?

my iphone 5 prioritizes EDGE rather than 3G. How do I make my phone prioritize 3G instead of the EDGE?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3

Likely because the 3G reception is not strong.

Unless there is a hardware or software problem, the iPhone will connect the fastest internet connection available. If wi-fi is enabled and the iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network, the iPhone will use wi-fi for data access. If a wi-fi network is not available, the iPhone will connect to the fastest cellular network at the time - LTE, 3G, or EDGE.

No, because it is already preferred if wi-fi or LTE is not available. There is no manual adjustment for this.

Once again - unless there is a hardware or software problem, the iPhone will connect the fastest internet connection available. Correct.

My iPhone 5 also prioritizes EDGE rather than 3G in areas where other phones use 3G without problems. Had the same "problem" with the 4S. I think iPhones just dont have as great 3G reception as other phones.

    Already answered.

The data cost has nothing to do with the speed of the connection. If you have an iPhone 5 and your carrier doesn't have an LTE network available, does that mean you are paying for nothing when you have 3G access? Too funny.

Your idle threats are being provided to fellow users only.

If an Android device provides this option and your carrier stinks without having adequate 3G coverage in all locations where you spend most of your time, get one. Be sure to purchase antivirus for it.

Your question is answered in the fourth post in the thread. No, there iis no manual way to change priorities.

There's another factor that hasn't been discussed yet. If there are no 3G channels currently available on the towers in range the phone will use EDGE rather than no connection. The cellular network has very little excess capacity, so a sudden surge in demand (or a partial network outage) can result in no available connections.
