This thread is soooo long....
I am used to my battery drain, and carry the cable with me wherever I go...
Can anybody recommend a good portable charger that will work with the 5? or a good USB portable charger?
I am researching on amazon, there are so many. Would like some feedback from folks in this forum who use the 5.

The battery drain problem started for me last Friday (iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.2), with the battery draining completely with minimal usage over a 6 hour time span. I backed up the phone on the computer and after doing a complete resetting of the phone, I was still experiencing the battery drain problem. However, in reading posts about iOS 6.1.2 being rolled out to fix a problem with Exchange, I simply deleted my Exchange account and then added it back again. That little adjustment appears to have fixed the problem. Normal usage today, wi-fi on and bluetooth on, Exchange working, battery life still at 84% after 7 hours.

I sorted out my iphone 5 battery drainage issue and I am again an Apple fan. I want to share my experience with you.
Like many I was forced into an upgrade from 4S to 5 by my provider (Vodafone). I was very happy with my reliable 4S but complied (they do not do the 4S 32GB anymore!!!). I backed up to Icloud and my computer. Connected the 5 and restored. ....BIG MISTAKE. All appeared to go well except that after a long charge overnight, I ended up with 30% battery by 3 pm, despite my best efforts to stem the flow I was beleeding power.
I googled the problem and found it was a common issue. I tried all the recommended tricks to no avail. Vodafone sent me a new phone and I had the same problem. I contemplated forking our £60 for a Morphie battery extension but resisted the temptation on the basis of "Why should I".
I called Apple support and spoke to some guy in Ireland. My issue was escalated to John a supervisor in the US. He was brilliant. He sorted me in 15 minutes and today after a long day's work I came home with 74% battery having really abused the phone all day. So her is how it was sorted out:
1) When upgrading from 4S to 5 do backup to icloud and/or your PC.
2) Plug in the iphone 5 but do not perfore a restore. If you do you restore iphone 4 stuff into a 5 and god knows what it does.
3) Unfortunately most will fall for the "restore from this iphone" option which is first suggested.
4) All you have to do is perform a clean intall as a new phone and then Synch. You will have to go through all the itunes tab to select what you want synched
5) Once the synch is done all should work fine.
If you have already done a restore, simply do as follows:
1) Back up to icloud and /or your PC
2) Perform a reset of the iphone 5 (general, reset, reset all settings)
3) Reconnect the cleared phone
4) Synch it
5) You are done
You will have to recheck all your settings (ring tone, e mail and so forth) which is a bit of a bummer but worth it to have a fully functional iphone.
It worked for me :-)
Best of luck to all

My iphone 5 battery last about 6-7minutes on normal use which is wifi on. Web browsing and 25% brightness. But when I'm on 3G battery draining 1% less than a minute. Embarassing! It was worst than my iphone 4 which can last bout 2mins. How long you guys can last on 3G?

We'll add another comment to the thread... iPhone 5, 16GB, AT&T, iOS 6.1.2. Terrible battery life (<50% charge, from full, after 4 hours on standby). Can't remember when it started, but the iOS updates haven't helped. No exchange server. No hotmail. Only iCloud email set up. Tried wiping & loading the OS from clean, and loaded apps from scratch (ie not from backup). No change in battery usage. Wiped again, loaded OS from clean, and loaded apps/settings from backup. No change in battery usage. Just now, turned off Location Services and for the first time in a while, the phone feels cooler -- I mean it's still warm (and it's charging, of course), but cooler than before.
I wonder if there is also a hardware issue with the GPS chipset? Seems like maybe it's not powering down the way it should...

My iphone 5 is driving me crazy. I have chargers everywhere. In the car, in the house, at my office, and a spareexternal battery to keep up with how bad the phone battery really is. I should have stayed with the iphone 4. the battery was better. If i turn off everything I use then i get 5-6 hours. that means I cant use the gps, music, facebook. etc.. this is the opposite of my ipad.. lasts weeks without charge. Looks like the problem is here to stay until apple acknowledges a problem which has not happened yet. i have gone to the genius bar and they say yes its a problem. Whell i can see this doesnt go anywhere. maybe the new samsung will be the ticket.

Sorry you're having such trouble with your iPhone5.
I initially had high battery drain for the first couple of weeks last fall, until I changed settings to disable "push" for most things, and disabling iPhone's constant automattic operational feedback to Apple. Since then I've been getting 2-3 days of battery life. I've done all the updates to IOS with no problem. I'm on the phone about 1-2 hours per day, occassionally use Google Maps Ap (to see traffic tie-ups) and also the Apple Map for navigation (works great for me in the New York City area). Also use CNN ap and occasionally surf Internet via Wifi. When using maps, drain doubles. Occasionally use Siri to find info. I did NOT have an iPhone before, thus no importing of prior phone data. That may be a key to the problem many are having - a problem solved by another poster, Dom1958.

My iPhone 5 battery is Terrible! On silent do not disturb at work, dead by 2 usually even if charged the night before! I would hope that a battery in any phone would last all day(6am-10pm) if barely used between 8 and 3:30. I have noticed though that I will put the the connector "in" the port, but actually the cable's contacts were not fully snapped into the port.

I am running off of a 16 gig black iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3. I have been having problems with my new iPhone 5. The battery only lasts me from 3-5 hours of usage. I have looked all over the internet and I have tried so much to get it to last longer than 5 hours. It should last from 8-9 hours of usage. My battery drains too fast.
Settings that are off:
Do not disturb
Siri raise to speak
Set automatic timezone
Cell network search
Diagnostics and usage
Genius for apps
Location based iAds
Setting time zone
iCloud is deleted
Diagnostics and usage settings are set to don't send
Under Spotlight search:
Contacts and applications are checked. Everything else is turned off.
Settings that are on:
Limit ad tracking
Vibrate to ring
Vibrate to silent
Autolock is on one minute
I only have 3 notifications in the notification center.
Under sounds vibration patterns, each notification has a vibration
Some additional information:
I've fully charged my iPhone from 1% to 100% about 3 or 4 times.
I reset my iPhone 3 times. I restored my iPhone from iCloud on my computer. I didn't set it up as a new device on my computer but I did set it up as new on the phone.
What should I do to make my battery last longer?
What can I do to make my battery last longer?
Help me people.

Honnestly since I use BatteryDoctorPro it went better as it switch to edge when iPhone is in sleep mode and also kill all apps in background after 5 mins... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wypqxVp41No
But anyway I'm very disappointed for the battery life...
