Q: MerpAD Office365  in trash and I have not used Office 365.

At startup I get an empty file in my trash called MerpAD Office365 and I have not used Office 365.  Does anyone know how to permanently stop this, please as it is annoying?  It appears to have materialised following the latest update for Office for mac 2011.

If you Google "MerpAD Office365" you'll see that users have been having a problem with "MerpAD" going back 5 or more years. From what I've read it's a problem with the Microsoft Auto Updater. I DO subscribe to Office 365 and I DO have the MS Auto-Update running and I HAVE been updating when prompted, but I've never had a problem with any "MerpAD" 'recovery' files.

There's one very old post about it on the Office for Mac forums but that message is getting some new complaints about the specific "MerpAD Office365" files... no concrete answers on how to solve the problem... I suppose just wait for another update?

Thanks for the input Clinton.  I realise it is nothing, does not cause any harm and can be deleted but it is frustrating when, so it would appear, Microsoft can put something on my computer to cause this to happen and I cannot clear it.

I've no idea why I'm not having the problem - and there aren't any answers on the Microsoft forums right now, just complaints. I would monitor the MS Office for Mac forums to see if anyone finds a solution... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/.

According to the latest answer by Xferno on 9/27/2013 there is a way to stop this:

I found that if you disable Office error reporting the recovered files folder will stop to appear in the trash at each start. Here's the procedure:

    1. Open application Office error reporting, the application is located in this folder

          /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0

    2. Go in preferences

    3. Uncheck enable office error reporting

Thanks for the hint, though my Finder doesn't show such file in that folder. In the whole library folder spotlight isn't able to find any file or folder containing the word "merp". Was the file location ever changed, perhaps by the latest update?

The file is still there. Don't use spotlight to search since it might be excluded from the search index since it's in a system level folder and not a user level folder. So in Macintosh HD, it's in Library > Application Support > Microsoft > MERP2.0 > Microsoft Error Reporting.app

Or using Finder, select "Go" from the menu bar, then "Go to Folder...", then type in "/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0" (without the quotes) and hit "Go". You should see the app there.

Thank you, lisdavid: all what I needed was pasting the exact folder address. I previously searched for the folder by manually navigating them, but didn't work: should I think that they were hidden?

I found the folder by going to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft and you should find listed a folder entitled MERP2.0 (or at least that's where it is on my MacBook Pro using Mavericks and I have thought it would be the same with Mountain Lion).  But be sure to go in through Macintosh HD and not your user profie.

Excellent explanation lisdavid. I am new to the Mac and had trouble finding the Microsoft error reporting app. Your explanation using Finder was perfect. Thank you.
