I'd assume it was the adapter itself.
I've tried resetting the SMC etc., but to no avail. I've checked the charging port numerous times and it seems okay, all contact points are in working order; however i'm clearly not an expert in hardware.
Unfortunately my warranty just ran out so ultimately it looks like i'll be having to pay Apple's extortionate prices for a charger.

Well, one thing is for sure... you'll at least need to find out what the issue was and what the fix was. You should have asked that when you were in the store... that info is free and they have to divulge it. Another visit or a call back to them to get that info is in your near future. After you get that info, go from there as to if you can fix it yourself or not. Don't assume.
