    Well said Pancenter. Well said.

What DAWs do you think are comporable to/better than Logic? I need to get a new macbook pro and am quite concerned about this OSX 10.8/Logic 9 problem. (I loathe Windows). Now I use 10.6.8 and Logic 9 on a Mac Pro tower and, according to Apple support, it is not possible to load 10.6.8 onto a new macbook pro. I am currently very productive and have learned to live with mild deficiencies.  I like my long hair and do not want to begin tearing it out.

I am a composer (poetry-to-music, opera, chamber works), and definitely not a Logic power user. I compose with Logic, but do not perform on Logic. I use the score/piano roll combo almost always. This combination is satisfactory for odd timings, syncompation, fine control over dynamics and incremental development.  I use software instruments that come with Logic. I have learned not to be too picky. I do not use loops.

I record voice, and use the Melodyne plugin. I use automation quite a bit, especialy for EXS24 envelopes. The score functionality in logic is rather buggy, but it's good enough so far. (I use the "step input keyboard" almost exclusively. Buggy, but OK.)

Is there a DAW which you think would be equally effective for my use, as described above, and which does not have its own significant problems?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    (Not Pancenter, but)

Given the description of your working methods, you will probably see no worsening of the situation when running Logic 9 on M Lion.

You'd more likely tear more hair out trying to get to grips with any other DAW

Further to the comment I made earlier, yeah - if you're that ****** off with it, you have to consider and try alternatives, and that's when you realise that the software you've been using for x amount of time has become a way of thinking in an automatic kind of way - you are gonna have to build up that kind of ability again, so what are you gonna do ?

Yeah, in my experience, there are three kinds of music software user interface:

    1. Written by people who have never used a computer
    2. Written by people who have never made music
    3. Logic Pro

Oh, well, perhaps you're agreeing in a certain kind of way, but I'm sure there are plenty of other DAWs that have their own strengths, the point is that you build up associations in your mind over a period of time with the way you want to perform, so it eventually becomes 'easy'. I've had to use all kinds of software in the course of working (totally unrelated to music) and I'm absolutely sure that people can only be really productive with software that they know and are relaxed with.

Try to think in terms of long term goal. Trying alternative DAWs,  it's difficult in short run, but sure we be happy in Long run.  Besides,  with other DAWs, I m sure we gaining some insight musically. Different way building up music, different way music inspiration. Logic Pro is an sick man, things of the past.  We need move forward.

Depends on what you do, I personally find Logic and Cubase very much alike, much more alike than they are different. I have no problem going between them.  It's not as fluid as Logic but I've found from a composing standpoint.... having to work a little more can produce vastly different, (often better) results. We often look for the quickest method, the path of least resistance in our software but forget that memorable works seldom are produced under such circumstances.

I used early music software in the mid 1980's so I think everyone is spoiled... I have some of what I think is my best MIDI work from back then composed on Dr.T's KCS (Keyboard Controlled Sequencer) which would seem

positively archaic by today's standards but it was well thought out, to use it you had to educate yourself... it was not easy. I think everyone should learn more than one DAW, it would/could expand your horizons.

Go here and look at VST Expression.

    http://www.steinberg.net/en/company/technologies.html

Check out some of the other technologies as well.

You can think Steinberg/Cubase for virtual instruments.. yes, including Logic's, (not the instruments but the development of virtual instruments) also for Low latency Audio systems. AU is taken in concept from VST although AU development has been ignored while VST development has been constant.

You mean the standards themselves?  VST has added a number of new features, but it seems like third parties are often very slow to support them.  That said, it would be nice to see some improvements to the AU standard along with the next OSX and Logic updates.

Yes, AU development reached a certain point several years ago and then seemed to stop, VST has had at least two version updates during that time, "VST Expression" being one of the additions. I know a couple of AU instrument developers that have told me there are "hooks" built into AU for direct integration of MIDI I/O but they have gone undeveloped. It may be that Logic in it's current state is the roadblock since Logic cannot directly address MIDI I/O ports.

BTW, yesterday I spoke with someone who said he was on the Logic team (I had called support about a different Logic problem) but I pointed out this thread. He said he had never seen this thread or heard of the issue which is the subject of this thread.

Maybe they are facing a more serious problem than this simple lag. This thread is nothing compared to their internal explosion.

Only explosion I hear is overactive imaginations and pipe dreams.

It's laughable that some people think they know what's going on with Apple or the Logic team.

p.s. Thanks for posting regarding the call you made.

This is a perfect example of why a call does more than a posting on a bulliten board.
