Barry, the key, as I've mentioned before is to get Apple to acknowledge the bug.

So far, they are not and sadly, my guess is that they will continue to not acknowledge it. Call it "political reasons" if you wish. I certainly don't know what lies deep in the brain trust of Apple.

All I can do at this point (in the face of no hard evidence) is use my intuition which tells me emphatically that they DO NOT want to fix this. Believe me, I so much want to be wrong about it.

On a different topic, I'm very intrigued with your mention of OS 10.9 Lynx. Is this just a guess or do you have some insider knowledge about this? I know macrumors.com often has leaked out information on upcoming developments. I'm curious.

    Howard,

Stephen is the person who mentioned OS X.9 rather than me.

With regard to getting Apple to acknowledge this symptom, based upon my previous experience in the software industry, my **guess** is that Apple tracks reported defects (i.e., items submitted to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html), that they assign reported defects to a category (e.g., functional, cosmetic, etc.), and that they assign a priority to it.

If this guess is correct, the priority assigned to this particular defect might be sufficiently low that Apple might not address it in Mountain Lion. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, I have described a workaround for this symptom—switch the focus to a different window, then switch back. Yes, it is not a fix; yes, it is not ideal. But it does work around the problem so that you can continue working.

I also posted a very effective automated workaround here in this thread just back a little bit. It utilzes the 3rd party utility called ikey.

Yes, the GUESS is mine and that's all it is.  Maybe a bit scientific in that Apple often likes Tuesdays to announce things-- although a 5th Tues of the month might be a first… (hey, they need as much time as they can get if it's gonna be July…)

10.9 is almost certainly the numbers they'll use <G>

Lynx has to be a real good bet -- I mean they've gone thru most of the non-domesticated cats-- and I don't see them calling it jaguarundi -- too similar to Jaguar!

It will be more iOS-like, and have SIRI.  Hopefully the nice leather trims will still be there or at least an option--- I love that stuff--- think I must have 1000 different icons on my Mac-- Thanks FOLDERBRANDER and color sidebars (thanks for the simbl solution!) -- isn't this below so much nicer than grey grey grey…---- YOU BET IT IS!

I'd love to see color folders instead of just color in the text area…  And since OS 7 there have only been 7 labels -- be nice to have 20+ -- I use this for sorting and such.

Well don't wanna get my hopes too high!  But color sidebars are back in iTunes 11 so maybe hope for the Finder and iPhoto!

    Best regards,

So the upshot is that this is another bug that Apple have no interest in fixing??

Sorry, I haven't gone through the thread, but when you say the cursor dissapears do you mean the trackpad/mouse cursor or the blinking text input cursor?

I've noticed it in Safari as well, but never in my Mail app as many have stated here.  Mine tends to happen when I'm watching a news video on a CNN or ESPN website.

Don't know if this guides the conversation towards the cause and eventual solution, but I hope so.

i also have the missing cursor in mail 6.5 w/ 10.8.4... and no idea how to fix it.

Maybe you can answer me – is it the text input cursor that disappears or is it the mouse cursor?

    Hi Elektroglide,

I have a workaround rather than a fix.

If you click in another Mail window, then click back in the window where the arrow cursor is missing, then the cursor will display.

Say, for instance, you have a message window displayed in which the arrow cursor is missing.

If you click in Mail's Message Viewer (or press the command key and the zero key simultaneously), then click back in the message window, the arrow cursor will now display in the message window (at least it does in my experience).

Other messages in this thread have suggested how this process could be automated using a third-party utility.

    Hope this helps.

    hi martin, me again

    it's the text input cursor.

    hi barry

thanks, yes, that does make the text cursor appear again, but only until i bring another app to the foreground.

i'll submit a bug report to apple, to add to the large pile of missing cursor reports which i imagine already exists.

Okay, thanks. Then it's the same thing I've seen, also on the Notes app.

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling it only happens after the comprer has been sleeping. If I do a restart and use the computer without putting it to sleep I don't think it happens.

Maybe one of you can try and verify if this is correct?

It is the mouse cursor that is typically an arrow.
