Q: how to merge phone number with imessage on 10.8.2

i updated to 10.8.2 and i had already been using imessage on 10.8.1 and before. i went to imessage and there is no option or alert or anything to add my phone number to it. i use the same apple id on my iphone and receive imessages at both my apple id email address and phone number. i have tried signing out, deleting all my messages, ive tried signing out restarting my macbook pro and signing back in, still nothing. any way to manually set it up or refresh the account?

update: i guess everyone says i need to update my iphone to ios6 first. i'm just going to wait for my iphone5 on friday to set this up as im not yet going to update to ios6 on my 4S

Alright.  That worked!  I don't know, but it seems like the secret was maintaing connection on the MBP and the iPad, but disconnecting the iPhone.  The last time I did it I disconnected EVERYTHING from the Apple ID.  This time I only disconnected the phone, but left the others signed in.

    Well, it worked!  Thank you!

Now, its I just want to figure out a way that I can get NON iMessage users' messages coming into my phone, iPad and into the messages app at the same time - like my email does - regardless of whether its a gmail, me, address.

    Thanks

Thank god that worked.  After turning it all off and starting it back up my phone number started showing up on messages on my Mac and back again on my iPad.  Thanks.

    Hi,

    Just a note.

I put the iPhone only in Airplane mode after removing the Apple ID

I did not touch my iPad during any of this.

I restarted my Messages app on the Mac but I may have "jumped the gun" on the pop up message arriving and it was then coincidence that the pop up about the iPhone using the Number and Apple ID appeard on restart.

I figured it out. I was having the same problem.

Go to your iPhone -> Settings -> Messages -> Scroll down to "Send and Receive". Enter the AppleID you want associated with this phone. The next time you sign in to messages on your Mac it will prompt you to accept adding the number. You should be good to go!

How to add phone number to IMAC.  Once this is done you can text from the iphone, walk in your home and continue same conversation from my ipad, and then I can walk in my office and continue same text conversation on my PC.  The complete text shows on all devices.

Ralph is correct.   I read articles and tried many things and nothing worked until I read Ralphs post.

It is in the iphone4s or above.  My iphone reset and my imessage on imac quit working.

IPHONE   Settings>messages>Send&Recieve and tap on Apple ID to make sure it is activated to send messages through.

Then this appeared on my imac and iphone

The number is added through Apple ID once you have it turned on both devices.

It was as simple as that. After turning iMessage off and then back on, my problem was quickly solved; and when I went into the preferences, I immediatelty say my phone # which I couldn't get to show up previously even if i paid for it...

There are two phone numbers and two iPads in my apple id. Each of us used to our one iPad for each phone number to send iMessages and now our phone numbers are not in the iPads. I have signed out several times and it's not working... Our phones are fine but not our iPads.

    Please help!!!

    HI,

On the iPhone in Settings > Messages  is the iPhone Number and the Apple ID both listed and ticked ?

In the "start Conversation From" which is the current info (number or ID) ?

I am understanding this correctly ?

You want one iPhone and one iPad to be linked but you only have one Apple ID between the four devices ?

    Hi,

I am not sure I follow the question.

You seemed to have linked to one of my replies on the first page and I can't see where I mention anything about any account.

Basically you have any Apple ID.

You can add it to an iPhone (in addition to the number) and it will be linked to the Number and you can then chose the Send From choice from the Receive At options (number and Apple ID)

This is done in Settings > Messages after your Enable the Messages app.

On the Mac you can use an Apple ID to "register" for iMessages.

If you have never used Messages on the Mac before it is the first thing it asks you.

If not open th Preferences from the Messages Menu in the Menu bar and then open the Accounts pane.

You add the Apple ID here.

It may ask you to answer an email to verify the Apple ID.

You start here and the Manage option to check if your Apple ID is verified.

Mine looks like this on that ID page

    Verified2-2.png

As you can see I managed to add a Second email and Verify that as the Primary Email and further down I added the original email and verified that.

This was because I linked the Apple ID to iCloud and also because it is a dial-up service email that I was hoping to drop but have not been able to.

As a consequence of that the page now want me to choose  one but then only offers me the Original Apple ID in the drop down.
