Further to my last post I have just had my iPhone greyed out problem repaired by the dealer I bought it from, under the product warranty.
I asked how they repaired the problem, he told me they replaced hardware inside the iPhone. I can only assume that this was a broken internal antena due to dropping or placing the phone down too fimly on a hard surface.
So the cost of this repair outside the product warranty is expensive! No amount of software downloading resetting or patches will repair the greyed out problem.
Could this be a product fault? Maybe Apple is aware of this? Who knows but if you are outside your product warranty period you are stuffed or facing a large repair bill and it will happen again and again.
I hope this helps.
How can so many people globally drop their Iphone & cause hardware damge. your case was just a coincidence, where u dropped your phone plus u were also on IOS 6.1.3 at that time. you were just lucky to get a replacement phone.
This is clearly a bug. I cant turn on my iphone's WIFI & the battery draining like anything.
Clearly its a bug & it shows apple's fault & improper testing before releasing. This is the last Iphone I bought.

Yes of course the phone was upto date with the lastest software and like everyone else I also tried everything! We all drop or phone from time to time but I agree the product should cope with that.
My posting is only an assumption and take it how you will.
I hope you get your phone fixed.

Hey yous guys.
My problem with grey wifi switch started from upgrading to 6.1.2. I have tried virtually every idea given here - reseting, restoring, freezing, jailbreaking, upgrading to 6.1.3 - you name it. Freezing made it work for couple of minutes, jailbreaking got me dancing for three weeks 'till yesterday, when it went back grey (I'm thinking it must have been coincidence that it started to work after jb). The only thing I haven't try is to heat it up. I'm thinking it must have something to do with that wifi module soldering, since it reacts to temperature and it's somehow related to iOS 6 firmware upgrade (overheating while loading?). Next week I will take it to technician to have wifi module resoldered, we'll see if it will do any good. Got iphone from my dad from States, I use it in Poland now, of course out of warranty, so It's all on me now. If you find any solution, let us know!
PS: I own 4s 16GB, if that helps to relate to.

Hi folks! It seems a lof of apple users having a lot of problem with the new software update. I'm not really an iphone fan but I'm quite impressed with the modifications they made for iphone. So far, everything seems to be fine. I updated my device (iPhone4s) to iOs 6.1.3 and I'm lucky enough I haven't gone into situation like you folks experiencing right now. I would just like to share my thoughts, it seems the issue has something to do with the wireless radio itself. This happens if you tethered/unthetered your device(s). I have a friend of mine who's having problem with his iPod which the wifi button is greyed out and have another friend with the same problem as well. All for the same reason, they jailbreak their devices. I guess Apple have to look forward into future updates and find some flaws and test it before offering the updates to users.

Well, not every one who has this problme have jailbreakerd there items. the one who started this tropic hes first one did this and he got a new one that did the same after a few days.
2 of my 5 iphones have got this problem and its only the 2 i have ios 6.1.3 on so i dont want to upgrade the others.
This is an ios problem that damages the hardware.
They haven't tested this update enought...

I am having the same problem, but it is very weird and i would say this is definitely a software problem. 2 days ago i got a new branded iphone 4s as a warranty exchange for my broken one (i did not have the 6.1.3 update there and it worked fine). This one i received with latest update and the wifi trouble is here. At first i noticed the wifi is malfunctioning - disconecting from the network, not discovering any others... so i tryed to off/on my phone and here i ran into grey wifi trigger. I tryed various combinations of reset&restore, but without success. This was yesterday during the day. In the later evening a came home and put my iphone into the rubber case. Just of curiosity a performed a hard reset where after turning it back on i suprisingly saw wifi is working. But this lasted just for an hour or so and after it started to malfunction again, i restarted it and the locked wifi was back. So i left the phone to discharge during the night and now i connected it to charger, turned on and the wifi is back on. But no cheers, it worked for like 5 minutes and again it is unable to stay connected or to find any other networks, so it will go grey upon next restart i suppose. Oh may there been a new update ASAP! I hope this will solve the problems, because this is very sad
EDIT: and the BT is not working either. it can be turned on/off, but it is unable to find any device and when trying to pair with my MacAir i received the "device unsupported" on my iphone with the only possible action to "forget device".

Yeah, right. They haven't tested the update enough. Well, all I can say this is one way of the companies (not just Apple) of getting your money out from your pocket (you know what I mean). Nothing personal but c'mon we have to be practical this is business. I'm really pleased with the service provided by apple. One thing I found out when I updated my phone is that all of my apps will no longer crashes and the battery is good enough (will not easily drain like others). I can use it all day long even playing online games.
