HT4623 How to change OS of iPhone 3GS?

I'm having iPhone 3GS with some old OS due to which I am unable to download any app etc. I want to know that how can I update my Os?

    You will have to update it using iTunes.

    plug it in to the computer then open up itunes

         a. Updating Your iOS to Version 6.0.x from iOS 5

     

              Tap Settings > General > Software Update

     

         If an update is available there will be an active Update button. If you are current,

         then you will see a gray screen with a message saying your are up to date.

     

         b. If you are still using iOS 4 Updating your device to iOS 5 or later.

     

         c. Resolving update problems

    If you have an iPhone 3GS, follow the directions here:

    iOS 6.1.3 will be installed on your phone. This update, for you, is an erase/restore deal, so make sure all of your data is on your computer before you attempt to update.
