Mar 28, 2013 9:08 PM in response to dastoelkby Paul Veronin,I've only played with 10.0.8 a couple of hours and wanted to stress test some of the 3rd party plugs I've got and I have to say that performance seems much better in this version. With background rendering disabled I'm actually able to add 2 to 3 effects to a clip and preview it with very little slowdown. Not realtime but close enough that I will be able to be more productive not having to wait for renders. The Coremelt ones are especially smooth compared to before and the ones I tested from FXFactory are working well also.
A lot more will be revealed to me as I put some real time into this release but my initial impression is really positive. What a difference a year makes.

Mar 28, 2013 9:23 PM in response to dastoelkby Peppy T,The following are results of applying each title (length 5 seconds each) to a 1080 30p timleline.
- default title: 03 secs to render / no other system or app performance issues
10.0.8 = 01 second
- Boogie Lights: 05 secs to render / no other system or app performanceissues
10.0.8 = 05 seconds
- Ornate: 04 seconds / no other system or app performance issues
10.0.8 = 3 seconds
- Far Far Away (a render hog) :31 secs to render / no other system or app performance issues
10.0.8 = 34 seconds
- Pixie Dust: FCP 10.0.7 = 3min 27secs to render / complete system freeze at 46% for :45 secs and a complete system freeze at 94% for 1min 15secs.
10.0.8 = 35 seconds

Mar 29, 2013 2:09 AM in response to dastoelkby Tom Wolsky,★HelpfulIt's in the customize keyboard window. Just know Control-Opt 1-6 changes the clip appearances to any if the Dix available options. The only interface change in the latest release.

Mar 29, 2013 7:24 AM in response to dastoelkby Martin S Taylor,I find it crashes when I come back to my computer after taking a break. It doesn't seem happy that the disks it needs to access have spun down. Seems stable enough as long as I keep using it, but taking a break is definitely bad news. Three crashes already this morning.

Mar 29, 2013 8:33 AM in response to dastoelkby RyanManUtd,OMG !
So fast, another update !!
After havimg multicam & able to export a certain section in the timeline ... I am 90% happpy.
The only thing left that I want is to be able to do a berzier mask. But we are now restricted to 8 points which is not posible or enough if I were to do rotoscoping. Not a big deal considering with plugins from Core Melt, we are now not restricted to only 8 points.
Cheers

Mar 29, 2013 9:27 AM in response to dastoelkby Russ H,I haven't done anything that would really stress it, but I have tested most of the kind of things I routinely do. After a couple of hours I'd say it's an OK update. Only one glitch.
The first project I started, FCP insisted on making the new project settings DVCPRO HD 960X720 rather than letting the 1080 Pro Res 422 clip automatically set them. Trashing the new projects and relaunching FCP until I finally – on the fourth attempt – got the settings right by using custom. Since then, automatic has worked.
Two inexplicable crashes to date – about the same frequency as I would get pre 10.0.8. Annoying bu tolerable.

Mar 29, 2013 10:59 AM in response to dastoelkby BenB,Final Cut Pro menu, > Commands> to Customize.
Or Option-Command-K.
Just remember Control-Option. Your option to control the clips views. Then just the up/down arrow keys. The numbers 1-6 simply jump to each state of clip view directly. Personally, I'm only using the arrow keys, and after a day and a half, their so second nature I don't even think, just hit keys.
Now, here's something for you all to try. Go to a Timeline clip, go to a keyframe-able line. Such as the audio level line you can grab and move, or certain lines like that in the Audio and Video Animation editors. Then Option-click to create a keyframe. With that keyframe (or any keyframe) highlighted, hit the Tab key, and type in a numeric number. You can't make it stick, bug, but when it does work, it will be great.
Also, Red Giant and others have updated their plugins for FCP X 10.0.8, so be sure to check all your thrid party plugins and utilities for updates! Very important!
As for FCP X being professional? Well, let us just end that discussion once and for all.

Guys I really appreciate your enthusiasm- I think it's time to pick up a copy of FCP. I know this is a little off topic here, but are there any good, cheap (hobbyist) cameras that you recommend? Someone in this thread mentioned multicam and that really has my interest peaked!

Mar 29, 2013 5:31 PM in response to BasementJackby DJ Duke,To me, it's not the camera that makes the work. It is how it is being used. You can pick up a samll Samsung NX with interchangeable lenses or get one of the Canons like 7D for less than $1000. The Samsung is $400 and been using it quite abit on the go. I use anything from Canon to Red to Si2K and again it depends on what you do and how you use it.
Seen too many people mess up with a Red camera and then also seen amazing work with an iPhone. Start small, and work your way up.

Mar 29, 2013 9:13 PM in response to BasementJackby digibudII,there are so many hobbyist cams. I like the Sony CX line. There are a few to choose from and they have fantastic zoom ability and shoot full 1080 60p. My cx260 has pretty visible fringing in super high contrast areas but in the $500 range there are huge trade offs somewhere. It's my pocket vid cam and I'm very happy with it. One huge issue with multicam usage with very divergent cameras is the change from a huge depth of field to a smaller depth of field. That's something to take into account when one cam has a tiny sensor and the other cam might be a DSLR with a huge sensor.

Mar 29, 2013 11:03 PM in response to DJ Dukeby BasementJack,DJ, is it the NX1000 that you like? It's on amazon for like $340 right now. looks to be a combo still video with interchangable lenses.
Are the still / image cameras generally thought of as better than the video only devices on the lower end?

Mar 29, 2013 11:06 PM in response to digibudIIby BasementJack,Digibudll, thanks - that 260's got a ton of great reviews on amazon! Do any of these cameras let you contol depth of field? or is it just that DSLR's end up having a narrower depth than something like the sony CX260?

Mar 29, 2013 11:19 PM in response to BasementJackby digibudII,Nothing that I know of in that price range allows you to control the depth of field. Most will allow you to click on an area of the screen to set white balance or exposure...you may be able to manually choose the over all exposure...but controls are very, very limited. DSLR's will typically allow that control but there are all sorts of other issues using DSLRs...zoom range, very limited depth of field which makes focusing much, much touchier...
I find a second cam useful but like everything, you have to learn through experience, how best to use whatever 2nd cam you choose and work it into your workflow. Recently, for instance, I did a photo shoot that required me to fly into a very small village on a single engine plane. I couldn't have anything approaching a full sized video cam or even a dslr in my lap but I had my little sony and I shot b-roll of the take off and landing an in-flight footage which I ended up using in the final short. It was perfect. So there are, of course, times when a small, compact video cam is useful just like a little still cam in the pocket is better than nothing.
