Q: Final Cut Pro X freezing on top spec new 27" iMac, help!

I finally received my new 27" iMac today and installed all the latest updates and then the latest versions of FCPX and compressor.

Spec of new iMac:

27" Late 2012

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB RAM (I also added 16GB of third party RAM to the machine to take it up to 24GB RAM but remove this later)

GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB Graphics card

1.12TB Fusion Drive (1.09TB free)

OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion

Immediately I noticed performance issues and then it kept freezing whilst running FCPX - the whole OS would freeze resulting in me having to actually turn off the machine and turn it on again. It happened repeatedly so have done all the obvious things but still have the issue.

So far I've tried (with no luck):

- removing the third party RAM

- restarting the computer, multiple times

- making sure everything is up to date

- removing the FCPX preferences

- doing a PRAM and SMC reset

- fully uninstalling and reinstalling FCPX

- running the short and long Apple Hardware Tests (no problems found)

I am working with a large quantity of video files off an 8TB Thunderbolt drive but I've been using FCPX on my old 27" iMac and had no problems with that at all, the spec of that being far less powerful:

27" mid 2011

3.4Ghz Intel i7

8GB Ram

Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

1TB hard drive

I'm thinking it could possibly be the graphics card or a software issue?

Any help or advice would be great!!!

Thanks!

Jon

    Hi Le500

    That is good news! I assume you tried the titles of death too?

    Aside from the fcp x update was there a prompt to update cuda drivers?

    The following are results of applying each title (length 5 seconds each) to a 1080 30p timleline.

    • default title: 03 secs to render / no other system or app performance issues

          10.0.8 = 01 second

    • Boogie Lights: 05 secs to render / no other system or app performanceissues

           10.0.8 = 05 seconds

    • Ornate: 04 seconds / no other system or app performance issues

           10.0.8 = 3 seconds

    • Far Far Away (a render hog) :31 secs to render / no other system or app performance issues

           10.0.8 = 34 seconds

    • Pixie Dust: FCP 10.0.7 = 3min 27secs to render / complete system freeze at 46% for :45 secs and a complete system freeze at 94% for 1min 15secs.

          10.0.8 = 35 seconds

    Hi all,

    So can we officially say after 20665 views, 75 days, 32 pages and 466 replies - has this issue now actually been resolved with the 10.0.8 FCPX update?!

    Would love to have confirmation from as many people as possible on this, especially some of the big contributors to this thread (you know who you are!).

    @jonuk85: everything works fine, sir; the issue was solved for good

    @Thunkster: FCPX (or any other Apple apps) do not use CUDA, they use OpenGL.

    Thank you Apple engineering and anyone else who helped put this to bed.

    The upgrade works fine here. Back to work.

    Ditto thank you Apple. Still managed to get through a major project with the issues and will be very happy to have FCPX in fine form.

    Everything so far is workin like a charm now, no stuttering of the system while rendering, no lock ups, and at last having spent this much on the machine really feels like it is paying off.

    This has been a pain to have to wait for, and frustrating how little progress information Apple have been willing to share, but relieved it is over!

    Went out and got the iMac for the third time -

    Installed latest versions of FCPX and Compressor, plugged in my 8TB G-RAID with all my existing Events and Projects in, all loaded up and working like a charm. No hanging or freezing like before.

    Thanks FCPX Team for getting this sorted... eventually!

    I can confirm the following for my Late 2012 iMac, 2GB 680MX Graphics, 32GB Ram, 750GB Flash Drive, OSX 10.8.3:

    FCPX 10.0.7 Pixie Dust - 2min 10 sec to render (with significant stuttering)

    FCPX 10.0.8 Pixie Dust - 25sec to render (with no stuttering)

    Problem solved!

    Thanks Apple

    What version are you using? Are you logged into the App Store with the Apple ID that purchased the software? Is it listed on the purchased page? Move the app to the trash and try to re-download.

    Got the latest 10.0.8 now, thank god for no more freezing problems, but still on top specs it takes time to render, so there must still be a bug, this is not so funny anymore when you buy an expensive **** computer with all that power that it is suppose to help with and still acts like a cheap *** machine
