I like to run without my drives (devices) on my desktop. I have a few key folders -- including my user root -- on my dock. I would like to add an alias of my Computer (Device) to the dock as well so I can go right to the root of the device directly from the dock icon rather than having to open a finder folder, go to "Devices" in the side bar and click on it from there. I don't see wany way to do this. Anyone got an idea? Maybe a terminal command?

When in the Finder, pressing the Shift, Command, and C keys will take you directly there.

Alternatively, save the following AppleScript as an application and put it in the Dock:

    tell application "Finder"

open computer container of application "Finder"

    end tell

According to this help section (from the Finder > Help > Dock), you can place applications on the left of the divider, and files/folders on the right. A device/drive is neither an app nor a file/folder (of course, Niel's solution is an application). You can hide hard drives in Finder Preferences.

It's my twisted sense of order...

LOL. Unfortunately, a device is not a folder.......and we all have to make do with certain things..... I'm still bemoaning the fact that I have to hit Command when opening a folder so I can view it in column view (which was not necessary up to and including Leopard).....

The Computer item itself is generated by the Finder as a convenience and doesn't correspond to an actual filesystem item the way files, folders, and drives do. As it doesn't actually exist in the filesystem, an alias can't be created to it.

Actually, you can mount HD on the Dock in the section that displays Trash (to the right or bottom). Mount your HD, choose the Macintosh HD folder and add it to that section Dock (the other section won't accept the addition). You say you've already added key folders. The key is to mount HD as a folder.
