Thank you Rudegar for the suggestion. This is the first thing I tried as stated in my second paragraph above. The problem is that the AppleTV does not show in the devices section of iTunes on my MacPro yet it does show on my MacBook Air. Since writing the above post I have also tried rebuilding my iTunes library and creating a new user on my MacPro with an empty iTunes. Neither of which worked. Please does anyone have anymore suggestions?

I am still experiencing this issue - can anyone help?
Since writing the above replies I have also tried to downgrade iTunes to 10.7 via these instructions -> http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/03/how-to-downgrade-from-itunes-11-to-version- 10-7-on-your-mac/ but that did not work. iTunes worked fine but the AppleTV was still not in my devices list on my Mac Pro

When I had this problem I found that my antivirus software (Intego) was blocking my apple tv. Once I added it to my "trusted" list it showed up again.
