Can't believe the amount of posts relating to this. Just tried updating to IOS 6.1.3 to see if that helps, but doesn't seem to have worked. Next step - the freezer!!! Seriously??? Oh well, I'll try anything at the minute...

I had this issue too. After upgrading to 6.1.3 i got my wifi back, but for only 20 mins.
Then i try this and worked for me, 3 days till now with wifi:
1. Turn off iPhone.
2. Using a hairdryer heat the wifi spot on top of phone.
3. Turn on iPhone. (This should make the wifi work for some time).
4. If the Wifi come back proceed to next step. If not try repeat.
5. With wifi working do a restore of ios 6.1.3
6. Ready, the wifi should be back.
This worked for me, before this the wifi only worked for a few hours after a heat with hairdryer.
Now it's working fine. I hope definitely.

The freezer does not work after it quit again after upgrading to 6.1.3...

Tried the freezer! Didn't work. Turned off phone completely and then turned back on again, wi-fi not greyed out anymore, but saying it's off. When I open it is saying 'Choose a network...' and spinning grey circle. Been like this for about 10 minutes now.
If this doesn't work, will try the hairdryer and reinstalling IOS 6.1.3 again - it's well I've nothing else to do with my time, isn't it !!

Well after 5 months of trying to fix my 4s I finally gave up and coughed up £139 for a refurb in Cardiff shop. Well done Apple you beat me, i couldn't take the inconvenience of useless phone which even without the wifi would run the battery dead in under 4 hours from a full charge.
I wish I had taken it back when original fault first showed but I stupidly waited for a software patch, and while i waited, my warranty expiration date passed by. That'll teach me for listening to the faithful as i like them had faith in the Apple brand sorting things out and i too believed it was a simple software error which would be fixed in 6.0.1 Well a succession of updates including 6.1.3 failed. So I gave up, you won this time and got more of my money, I'm sure that £139 will make all the difference to your corporate balance but you won't be getting any more from me. My custom is going elsewhere from now on.
The lack of any helpful answers to my questions from the "Genius" was very disappointing, she was totally disengaged but eventually conceded that she was aware of a few with similar issues but nothing that pointed towards a significant problem with the phones. She knew nothing about the discussions on this or any other forum.
Although £139 isn't the end of the world to me it certainly is the end of he relationship between myself and the apple brand. When this one breaks I'm moving to another brand. I genuinely feel that Mr Jobs would be ashamed by how his company have behaved with our problems.
Good luck to all the hair dryer and freezer enthusiasts, it worked for me a couple of times but never lasted more that a couple of days.

I first had this issue before I updated to IOS 6. Wi-fi first started searching for my home network for ages and then the option greyed out completely. I went online to research the issue and tried everything suggested (even the freezer thing which did work for a short time). When I was trying to restore my phone it had a total meltdown and just kept displaying "Connect to iTunes".
Rang Apple care and they gave me all the info about sending the phone away etc and also mentioned that I could bring my phone to an Apple shop. There is none in Dublin but a friend of mine happened to be going to Belfast that weekend so I went with her and got the phone replaced. As mentioned by Spheroids, I found the "Genius" a bit of a smart arse. I think that genius title really goes to their head!
Phone was working away fine and a couple of days later, the wi-fi starts acting up again. I fiddled around with it and got it working but it went again last night-totally greyed out. Tried updating it to the lastest and did all the usual things.
I am not impressed at all, my phone wasn't even a year old and now the same thing has happened to this replacement I have. I'm not going to be near Belfast again any time soon-it's like a 3hr drive from my house and I'm not sure if I'm bothered messing around with Apple care, sending the phone away only to get another one with the same issue
Apple really need to sort this out!!

My wi-fi working now
Simple step, just restore your phone as original from factory. Good lucky all :-)

My 4S is working since 11:00 pm last night. I heated the phone with hair dryer (2-3 minutes). Go into iTunes, restored it. SET UP as new phone with a newly created Apple ID. Did not backup old phone info into the phone. Finally I use ICloud to download old Contacts (log into iCloud with old ID).
So far so good...But how long?

My Wifi just got back for NO REASON!!!
I upgraded to ios 6.1.3 as soon as it came out with no outcome days ago.. I just turned off my 3G for a couple of hours today, because of battery issues, and of course the phone "died" for one hour at the most..
I came back home and charged, turned 3G on to check my mail and suddenly i was asked to choose a wifi network!!!
What was the problem????
Will it last this time????

Good for you! No one knows if it will last. I suspect that Apple does not even know what is causing this, and there may be multiple causes. They have not even acknowledged the problem. It happened twice to my husband's new iPhone 4S, and was fixed both times by turning on Airplane mode and resetting. If it happens again, the phone is going back for a replacement.

Hi guys. Okay seriously the hair dryer method works, however only for about 6 days.
I received a new phone as my old one was still in warranty. It developed same wifi problem.
I'm now onto my fourth phone in three weeks as all replacements had same wifi grey out problem.
All quick fixed after heating up with hair dryer!!!! However I still took phone back to apple who said each time they'd never heard of this problem!!!! I said they must of as this was the fourth time I'd been in about this problem in two weeks and spoken to same apple rep!!!! They said they had no record of my original
Complaint, only that phone wouldn't connect to Internet!!!
Even the original rep I spoke to denied my problem was with wifi greeting out!!!
I was furious but lucky to be in warranty. 4 phones in and operating on iOS 5 it works!!! I just didn't upgrade software updates s
So use hair dryer but within 6 days your Bluetooth will disappear and you'll loose calls.
By all means its a quick fix but why should we be fixing problems like this.
My upgrades due next year. Android here I come

I updated my 4S to 6.1.3 a few days ago, and the WiFi grey out issue started. I tried the flashlight option, had it running for a few minutes then rebooted the phone, WiFi came back on. But it did not last long. Now WiFi is "permanently" greyed out, no amount of reboots work and I'd be loathe to put it in the freezer. I did play games (via 3G) until the phone got really hot to the touch, but that didn't help either - although nothing shut down.
I have my phone by my bedside overnight, with the airconditioner on, so perhaps its related to temperature fluctuations? Starting up without the SIM card didn't work either. I'm out of ideas, either I trade in my otherwise perfectly fine and well-maintained phone that's almost a year old, for a refurb unit with God knows what other past issues, or suffer slow internet connection even when WiFi is available. And, I'm not putting my iPad through the same ordeal...

Run to the store you lucky guy you. You will get extra 90 days fo warranty with replacement to look forward to and plenty time to complain about how bad Apple updates are.
