Q: iTunes 11.0.2.26 for Windows - No CDs showing up in Library on left - but passes diagnostic test?

I have imported CDs successfully into this latest version of iTunes before. Today when I insert an audio CD to import, nothing show up in the LIbrary to allow me to import it.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit - and Windows recognises and autoplays / plays the audio CD in VLC player with no problem. When I select 'Show CD in iTunes' from the autoplay menu, iTunes opens but no CD shows up.

I ran the iTunes CD diagnostic test (and the other tests) and it passed everything. I've included the log below. This is the case with every CD I've tried.

I've tried uninstalling, and installing a fresh download of iTunes, rebooting several times, removing the lower buffer in the registry, opening iTunes directly from the .exe - as an administrator, nothing I try is making any difference - the CDs simply do now display in iTunes (which is set in the preferences to display tracks).

Any suggestions are most welcome.

I have exactly the same problem. iTunes won't recognize either my internal (SATA) or external (USB) CD drive, but both pass the diagnostics. By any chance did you re-letter your internal drive? I made my internal drive be A rather than D. I'm wondering if that might have something to do with it (although it *shouldn't* !!!)

Not sure what we're supposed to do with the link you posted. We've both run it. Diagnostics finds no errors and correctly reads all tracks.

OK. I see in your diagnostics that your CD drive is B... Hmmm. I've got the same build of Windows 7 only mine is Pro. Also running the same build of iTunes and QuickTime.

That link is the article to apple knowledge base, that allows you to fix your windows registy changes made by one of the cd/dvd/blueray writing programs that overtook and disabled your drivers. I or anyone else can not fix it, since every time it is different so you need to follow instructions and if they point to another link go to next article. If by any chance you getting incorrect link, copy and paste that in to your browser:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1567

you want to expand  part 6 most likely.

But if the diagnostics says all parts passed, then what is there to fix? It's not failing on anything.

Hi - glad to see I'm not the only one.

I changed my optical drive to B: when I first build the PC, and it did work fine allowing me to import CDs into iTunes without any problem until a couple of weeks ago when the CDs just suddenly stopped showing up in the interface at all. I completely removed iTunes and cleaned it out of the registry, and I've never installed any burning software. Clean reinstall of iTunes and still nothing. Troubles me that the diagnostic test tells me everything about the CD in the drive, but it simply doesn't show up anywhere else in the program. I can play the CD in all other programs without any problems.

    Veyr frustrating!

Mine is a brand new machine. Burning software was installed before iTunes was installed. I am looking at this article which points to a possible problem with the GEAR drivers: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308

It also points to the afs.sys and afs2k.sys drivers as a potential problem. I've verified that I don't have these drivers on my machine.

When I go to the GEAR site, it tells you to manually uninstall the GEAR drivers and install the latest ones. First, manual uninstall which involves editing the registry. Really? While I'm quite the expert at registry editing, NO CONSUMER should ever be told to edit the registry to delete anything. Second, if in fact the GEAR drivers are the problem, shouldn't iTunes install the right ones? This is a prime example of poor software engineering at its core.

The above article suggests that the GEAR drivers need to be updated. I did so according to the directions. That didn't fix the problem. I've also verified that I'm running the latest vendor firmware on both CD/DVD drives.

    There is some OTHER problem.

I noticed that the article is suggesting the problem is that the optical drive is not recognised outside of iTunes, or throws out error messages outside of iTunes.

I followed the instructions anyway (can't hurt, right?) for all solutions - I didn't have afs.sys or afs2k.sys either, and the firmware is up to date - and when I started iTunes after a reboot I had the error message:

"iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs, you need to reinstall iTunes"

...well, guess what - I tried a repair install: no change. I totally removed iTunes with Revo and installed a fresh download: no change. I still get the error message every time I start the program, and no CD shows up. At least now it's failing the diagnostic test, as it says "No audio CD found" (it does find the drive).

I'm stumped. I think I'll do a repair installation of the OS.

Okay - I'm back at square one - Totally removed iTunes/Quicktime using Revo, reinstalled all GEAR stuff - ran the MS CD 'fix it'' prgram which deleted the Upper/LowerFilters again, rebooted and reinstalled iTunes from scratch... now I get no error message and the diagnostic test passes with no problems.

Just can't see the bloody CD in the interface!

Here we go - I don't quite believe this...

I've fixed my problem after weeks of multiple reinstalls and reboots and hours reading forums and all sorts by...

    Reassigning the drive letter.

I went into computer management and changed the optical drive to 'T:' randomly - opened iTunes and it queried Gracenote right away. I'm importing my CD as I type this.

This solved it for me, not sure why A: and B: don't work, but for me T: does. Hope you can have similar success.

Interesting discovery... Remapping the CD/DVD drive to "T:" works for me as well.  I did not uninstall and reinstall iTunes. All I did was remap to "T:".  Someone needs to fix a bug in their program...
