The fix for me was to close all running applications then tick the box to re-open windows when logging back in (I had it un-ticked before).

The shut down went from >20 seconds to about 1 second! (I have an SSD installed in my iMac.)

Now whether this stays fixed is another matter!

Just figured out how to quote people in a reply. Anyway, again, this worked for me.

I just wanted to tell you, that i updated to 10.8.3 last week!

It now seems to be less slow than before, but there is still random times when shutting down takes very long!

My "fix" in the first post doesn't seem to work after doing it several times so...

The only thing i really now:

It must be something with which Apps you run!!

I'm not sure which Apps but i believe iTunes is one of these!

I followed the first step from this link.  http://joepcsolutions1.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-to-speedup-mac-os-x-mountain-lio n_5051.html

I simply went to disk utility, clicked on my Mac hard drive, clicked on verify disk permissions which found permissions that didn't match.  After that, I clicked on repair disk permissions, and it completely fixed my problem.  I didn't bother with any of the other steps he mentioned in the link.

I wasn't comfortable using the terminal commands, so this was a nice easy fix for me.  I just hope it lasts.

This doesn't work anymore.  I am back to slow shut downs.

This didn't work for me either!

I have solved this issue for real!

Guys - i tried everything and some things worked temporarily but nothing stuck for good. I restrted with each app open to test which was causing it. Nothing worked.

Then I found this in mac chat on another site and it works!!!! I have restarted my mac 20 times now with all apps open then quit then shut down and I can confirm it works.

It is however a terminal code and proceed with caution.

Enter each line individually and hit enter after. You may be asked to enter your password after the first "enter". When you insert your password.. it does not show... you just hit enter and return. (at least that is what happened to me)

    Here we go:

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ExitTimeOut -int 1

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.securityd ExitTimeOut -int 1

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder ExitTimeOut -int 1

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.diskarbitrationd ExitTimeOut -int 1

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication ExitTimeOut -int 1

I have never posted a comment on any site before but i know i will make somepeople happy with this.

Your all welcome. And if it didn't work for you, I feel your pain. Apple has been dropping the ball lately.

this ^^^^ worked perfectly for me. i have had the annoyance of slow shutdowns for nearly a year, this works every time now. down to 2 secs for shutdown. thanks so much!

just one little question to all...

is anyone of you using the Xbox 360 Controller Driver from tattleboogie?

i just found out (on a clean reinstall of ML) that this driver is, whats killing my fast shutdown..

so with the driver installed i have about 20-30seconds shutdown time... if i uninstall it (so remove the launchdaemon, the preference pane, etc. it's shut down in about 1-2 seconds!

by the way... the pre-pre-post seems not to be an excelent solution due to system killing before shutting down, it really more looks like killing the system to power it off more quickly than it really should! It's like just cutting off power while its running so... that may result in a few problems with some apps losing any important settings or stuff... but.. it's everyones own thing what hes doing with his machine... i just wanted to mention this!

Well... i guess, after several reboots... this actually wasn't the main problem.

slowly this is getting too annoying... maybe we should just wait for 10.9 to solve this (or maybe make it even worse...)

This worked for me too. So I went the next step and closed individual applications and left the remaining open. If I shut down Skype and leave the rest open I still get a fast power down. If I shut down all the others and leave Skype open then it's slow.

After the solution in the first post stopped working (which was very soon), I tried this one. It worked, and it is still working after 30 or more shutdowns. Thanks designanthem.

    You are very welcome sir.

I sometimes get a slow shutdown here and there, but mostly 100 shutdowns alter it is still very fast. For the people it does not work for, I have a feeling there are more than than reason or combinations of bugs which cause it.

There was a time when I blamed Drop box and skype and removed them from log in items, incase that helps anyone.

    FINALLY someone solved this!!!!!

    THANKS SO MUCH Designanthem!!!!!!

I was sticking with Snow Leopard because I could't stand ML's ridiculously slow shutdown. I found it REALLY annoying and frustrating. Now I registered at Support Communities just in order to be able to thank you.
